Hi all, I'm trying to find out about the Scarborough line in England
from North Walsham, County Norfolk. I have found information that
goes back to John Scarborough (1470-1540) born in North Walsham. He
was married to a woman named Maude (last name unknown).

I have:
John Scarborough (1470-1540) married. Maude __
Henry Scarborough (1521-1605) married Elizabeth ___
Henry Scarborough Esquire (1565-1617) married Mary Humberstone
Captain Edmund Norton Scarborough (1584-1635) married Hannah Butler
Col. Edmund Scarborough (1618-1671) married Mary Littleton

Col Edmund Scarborough's brother, Charles Scarborough, was the King's
physician and was mentioned in the diaries of Samuel Pepys... Col
Edmund was known as the "scoundred of the eastern seabord" and is a
well-known person in the history of Virginia, a member of the House
of Burgesses, etc... If anyone knows more ... help!

Tracy, it's been ages since I've dealt with this lineage--which an
ultimately unproved link placed in my maternal grandmother's
ancestry--and to get to what copied records I have I'll have to turn
archaeologist. What I can tell you is that Colonel Edmund's
reputation is based on his maltreatment of Eastern Shore Indians. I
recall one account of how he arranged for a kind of "summit" between
local chiefs and colonial interests, only to turn on and massacre the
unarmed Indians. I also remember reading that Colonel Edmund
purchased the original Mayflower and used it to run supplies up and
down the eastern seaboard.

The Scarboroughs, Littletons, Custises, Whittingtons, were all
interrelated and among them were some fascinating characters. I'll
see if I can dig up what data I still have, at least to give you some
points of departure for research. I think I still have a slide of
Col. Edmund's descendant, the thrice-married Tabitha Scarborough, a
woman of strong personality and great charm who was painted by either
Sir Peter Lely or someone from his studio in London. I remember
hearing that later generations ordered in a hack painter to "raise the
bodice" on Tabitha's low-cut Restoration gown, so as to conceal the
effulgent cleavage to be seen there. That painting is or was in the
Frick collection in NYC.

Tracy, maybe you know about these sites already - here are two rather
extensive on-line sources of information on the Scarboroughs you've
asked about:

Grant, thank you! That is awesome. My grandma had told me Col
Edmund ran guns up and down the eastern seabord - from what you say
he must have used the Mayflower to do that. Incredible! That is
something else. My grandma and grandpa visited his house in Virginia
in the 1950s and they almost bought it because it was for sale but
they were newlyweds without much money at the time. I am dying to
know if his house is still there. The story about Tabitha is equally
interesting. My grandma is going to send me the rest of the info so
I'll know which of Edmund's children we are descended from. Should
be interesting. Thanks so much for this.

Is there any connection between these Scarboroughs and
the Lumley Earls of Scarborough?

Lloyd

Ah, I'm trying to figure out the same thing. My grandmother said she
visited the Scarborough's castle in England many years ago. She said
that it was inherited by one of Edmund's brothers and that it was
still in the possession of the Scarboroughs today... she can't
remember the name of the castle (she's 91) but after some snooping
I've come up with Lumley Castle which is currently owned by the Earl
of Scarborough. I'm just not sure it's the same line of
Scarboroughs. I'm new to genealogy and don't have many resources.
