On page 249 of volume IV of _The Complete Peerage_ it is stated that
James FitzMaurice FitzGerald, 10th Earl of Desmond (d. 1529) married
Amy, dau. of "Turlogh Mac-I-Brien-Ara, Bishop of Killaloe." She
married secondly (CP VII: 207) Edmond FitzMaurice, 9th Baron of Kerry
& Lixnaw, where she is described as the daughter of "Turlogh
Mac-I-Brien-Ara." According to the Desmond entry she died before
1537.
The problem which arises from these two entries is that, so far as I
can tell, there was no Turlough Mac-I-Brien-Ara, Bishop of Killaloe.
The Mac-I-Brien-Ara of the right generation to be Amy's father was
probably either Donnell m. Teige (d. 1508 AFM) or his son Murtough m.
Donnell. The two nearest Turlough Mac-I-Briens-Ara were the
grandfather of Donnell (d. 1399 AFM) and Murtough's son (d. 1601 AFM)
neither of whom could conceivable be her father.
However, there was a Bishop of Killaloe who seems to fit the required
description. He was Turlough O'Brian, Bishop of Killaloe, who died in
1525 per the Annals of the Four Masters (AFM), Vol. 5, p. 1379. He
does not seem to be a member of the Mac-I-Brien-Ara family though.
His pedigree as given in AFM runs: Turlough m. Mahon m. Turlough m.
Brian Catha-an-aenaigh Ua Briain. The Mac-I-Briens-Ara are, so far as
I can tell, descendants of Brian Roe O'Brian, Lord of Thomond (d. 1277
AFM) via his alleged descendant Murrough na-Raithnighe O'Brien (d.
1383 AFM). I cannot place Brian Catha-an-aenaigh in any O'Brian
pedigree with certainty given only the materials I have at hand but
even assuming he were descended from Brian Roe, Bishop Turlough could
not have been closer than third cousin to the Mac-I-Brien-Ara of his
time.
In summary I would suggest that the CP entry be changed from "Amy, da.
of Turlogh Mac-I-Brien-Ara, Bishop of Killaloe" to "Amy, da. of
Turlough mac Mahon O'Brien, Bishop of Killaloe." I'd appreciate any
comments on this change.
Sincerely,
Kelsey J. Williams

Hello,
Good! That's the bishop I was referring to above. I used the
Anglicization since that appears to be the form the CP and the AFM
usually adopt.
Sincerely,
