Dear Newsgroup ~

I've noticed various online databases state that Gunnor d'Aubeney,
widow of Robert de Gant (died 1191), married (2nd) Nicholas de
Stuteville, of Liddell, Cumberland (died 1218) and (3rd) Ralph de
Secheville.

Complete Peerage, 7 (1929): 674, footnote b (sub Lincoln) confirms the
2nd marriage of Gunnor d'Aubeney to Nicholas de Stuteville, citing as
its source Curia Regis Rolls. i. 288, and W. Brown, Feet of Fines
Yorks, Divers Co., no. 51.

Elswhere, Complete Peerage, 7 (1929): 675, footnote f (sub Lincoln),
states that Gunnor d'Aubeney's son, Gilbert de Gant (died 1242), had a
daughter, Gunnor de Gant, who married Ralph de Socheville (sic). It
cites as its source: Vesp., E xx, f. 70; Linc. Fines, i. 300, and ii.1.

I have Lincolnshire Fines, ii.1, it being Final Concords of the County
of Lincoln, 2 (Lincoln Rec. Soc. 17) (1921), edited by C.W. Foster.
The item is actually on pages 1-2, not just page 1. It is a final
concord dated 6 July 1245, between Gunnora de Sechevill and Gilbert de
Gaunt regarding lands in Barthon, Ferriby, Thorp', and Brandon. This
document makes reference to an earlier agreement made by Gunnora's
former husband, Ralph de Sechevill, and Gilbert de Gaunt, father of the
said Gilbert. In a footnote, the editor indicates that the earlier
agreement is dated 3 February 1238-9, and is published in Lincolnshire
Fines, i. 300-301.

There is nothing in the 1245 agreement to indicate the identity of
Gunnora de Sechevill. However, the helpful online A2A Catalogue
provides an abstract of a charter issued by her in which she is styled
"Gunnora de Gaunt, widow of Ralph de Sechevile":

Source: A2A Catalogue
Nottinghamshire Archives: Savile of Rufford: Deeds and Estate Papers,
Reference: DD/SR/102/88

Grant by Gunnora de Gaunt, widow of Ralph de Sechevile, to the monks of
Rufford' of her lands etc. in Bartona. Date: c 1250 - 1260.

Due to chronology, I suspect Complete Peerage is correct in identifying
the Gunnor de Gant who married Ralph de Secheville as the granddaughter
of the earlier Gunnor d'Aubeney who married Robert de Gant and Nicholas
de Stuteville. The correct name of the younger Gunnor's husband,
however, was Ralph de Secheville, not Socheville as stated in Complete
Peerage. As stated above, Ralph de Secheville was living 3 February
1238/9, but dead before 6 July 1245.

If anyone has further information on any these people, I'd appreciate
if they would post it here on the newsgroup.

Dear Newsgroup ~

As stated in my post earlier today, Complete Peerage 7 (1929): 675,
footnote f (sub Lincoln) indicates that Sir Gilbert de Gant (died 1242)
had a daughter, Gunnor, wife of Ralph de Socheville [recte Secheville].
Besides Gunnor, Sir Gilbert de Gant also had another daughter,
Juliane, who married by settlement dated before June 1210 Geoffrey de
Armenteres, son and heir of Henry de Armenteres. For a full transcript
of Juliane and Geoffrey's marriage settlement in Latin, see Hatton,
Book of Seals (1950): 205. The following synopsis is also provided:

"Charter of Gilbert de Gant giving to Geoffrey de Armenteres, in free
marriage with Juliana his daughter, the service of 2 knights by
reducing to Geoffrey and his heirs by Juliana the service due from the
fee which his father Henry de Armenteres had held of Gilbert from 10 to
8 knights; he also quitclaims to Geoffrey the relief due by reason of
his father's death. (before June 1210)" END OF QUOTE.
