Marc Hoover made me look into this family and I found the following question:

Charles Carroll, signatory to the Declaration of Independence, has an entry in Wikipedia where is said that his daughter Mary married Richard Caton. This Richard Caton had by another wife two daughters,
1.Louisa Catherine who in second marriage became Duchess of Leeds
2.Elizabeth who became Baroness Stafford.
Mary's daughter Marianne married the Marquess of Wellesley

The Complete Peerage Volume VII page 517
Francis Godolphin, 7th Duke of Leeds, married Louisa Catherine, 3rd daughter of Richard Caton and Mary Carroll, daughter of Charles Carroll

here a footnote : Of her two sisters one became Marchioness of Wellesley, and the other Baroness Stafford.

According to Wikipedia there was a fourth Caton girl, Emily who married John McTavish.

Richard Caton was he married once, or twice? And was Mary Carroll mother of all four girls?

CP XIV under Leeds has no corrections in this regard.

For many years a man haunted our local (California) Highland Games who had papers acknowledging him as the Chief of Ely O'Carroll. I later saw him featured as such in a book on the modern descendants of Irish royalty, alongside other Chiefs still living in Ireland. I have heard that he passed away, but I am not sure - if my report of his death is premature, I apologize in advance. Do any of you have an opinion about him (if you know who I am talking about)? Except for his last name, Carroll, I do not recall much about him. I had more interesting conversations with his wife, a fellow Butler (and, therefore, O'Carroll) descendant. Bronwen

Dear Leo,

I thought for sure this family would be covered in _Burke's American Families With British Ancestry_ in the supplement to the 1939 edition of BLG (the former being available on ancestry.com). There is a Carroll family treated in that work, but not this one, and it wouldn't have addressed the Caton line anyway.

During the 1990's a series of volumes was published on the Descendants of the Signers of the Declaration of Independence, grouped by state, or in the case of smaller states, two or three. As in all works of this nature, coverage of some lines was more complete than others and certain fairly well-known people are missing, like the singer David Van Cortlandt Crosby, born long before the series was published, a descendant of New York signer William Floyd, and fairly close cousin of the Baron Huntingfield whose grandmother was a Crosby.

I only have notes on this rather than the entire Carroll descendants section as this family also figures into the ancestry of Thomas Riley Marshall, 1854-1925, whose mother Martha Ann Patterson Marshall, was a great-granddaughter of Mary Carroll and Richard Caton. (This is a case where the Descendants of Signers volume is incomplete in that it doesn't carry this particular line that far).

According to my notes on Thomas Riley Marshall, Mary Darnall, (1749-1782), first wife of Charles Carroll, signer of the US Declaration of Independence also descends from American RD immigrant ancestors. I'd like to review all of my work on this before I discuss this any further although anyone else aware of these lines feel free to step in :)

There's another interesting connection ...

Mary Carroll = Richard Caton
Mary Anne Caton, m. (1) Robert Patterson, m. (2) 2nd E/Mornington

Robert Patterson, son of William Patterson and Dorcas Spear was brother of Elisabeth Patterson, wife of Jerome Bonaparte.

I'll check into this further when I get a chance.

Leo,

From _The Life of Charles Carroll of Carrollton, 1737-1832 With His Correspondence and Public Papers_ Kate Mason Rowland, vol 2, 1898,
Appendix D, 438-39

Mary Carroll, b. Sept. 2, 1770, m. Richard Caton, son of Richard Caton, of Liverpool, Nov. 1786
1. Mary Caton, m. (1) Robert Patterson, m. (2) the Marquis of Wellesley,
dsp. 1853
2. Elizabeth Caton, m. Baron Stafford, dsp. Oct. 29, 1862
3. Louisa Katherine Caton, m. (1) Col Sir Felton Bathurst Hervey,
m. (2) Francis Osborne, 7th Duke of Leeds, dsp. April 8, 1874
4. Emily Caton, m. John McTavish, British consul to Baltimore
A. Charles Carroll McTavish, b. Jan. 18, 1818, m. Marcella Scott
B. Richard Caton McTavish, b. March 24, 1821
C. Mary Wellesley McTavish, b. Nov. 21, 1825, m. ----- Howard,
son of the Earl of Carlisle
D. Alexander Simon McTavish, b. April 28, 1829, m. Ella Gilmor

According to Burke's Peerage, 4C is Mary Wellesley M'Tavish, Genealogics I00253658

This eliminates a descent from this family for Thomas Riley Marshall, Woodrow Wilson's vice-president. Apparently the late 19th century Wabash Co., Indiana biographical source indicating that was the case is another example to add to the the list of many spurious connections found in such (late 19th century American county biographical) sources.
