Hello All,
The following is an attempt to correlate available
information concerning the family of Soothill of Soothill (and
identifiable younger issue) between say 1250 and 1450. The
primary impetus for the current project, towards a more accurate
reconstruction of the Soothill family of this period (and
earlier if possible), is documentation recently made available
through the PRO.
Any question, comment and criticism of the following will be
appreciated.
Good luck, and good hunting.

SOOTHILL oF SOOTHILL
1. Sir John de Sothill, probable grantee of a messuage in
Heckmondwike, co. Yorks. by John de Heckmondwike, and
beneficiary of a quitclaim concerning a fourth part of
a bovate of land in Illingworth. [1] He entered into a
restrictive bond with ‘William son of Henry de Rutonest’
in 1242, together with his wife (called ‘lady A’ in the
bond digest). [2]
1. Sir John de Soothill, of Soothill, co. Yorks. & c.,
probably son of 1. above. He demised his land in
Moulbreck for 10 years in return for an annual rent of
5 marks, 15 Edw. I (1286/7). [3] Witness to an undated
deed (est. 1260-87) relating to Osberton, co. Notts.
together with Sir William de Furnival and others. [4]
Deceased before 3 Edw II (1309/10), at which time his
younger son Henry had succeeded his eldest son and heir
William. [5]
1. William de Soothill, of Soothill, Morley, Batley,
Heckmondwike, Ardsley, and Chidsall, co. Yorks., eldest
son and heir. He evidently succeeded his father. He m.
Joan _______, who survived him. He died in or before
1309/10, at which time his widow Joan was granted dower in
the manors of Soothill, co. Yorks. & c. by his brother and
successor, Henry. [5]
2. Sir Henry de Soothill, of Soothill, co. Yorks. & c., younger
son and heir to his brother William. As noted above,
he granted dower in 1309/10 to Joan, widow of William,
‘ of the manor of Sothill' etc, with all William's lands etc
in Morlay, Batelay, Heckmundwick', Erdeslawe and
Chiddeshill' (Soothill, Yk Morley, Yk Batley, Yk
Heckmondwike, Yk Ardsley, Yk Chidsall, Yk) as dower
Henry to have two thirds and Joan one third of the profits
from thinning the woods’ [5]
Sir Henry entered into an agreement in 1324/5 with Sir
Richard de Moseley for the marriage of his younger son John
to Helen/Elaine de Moseley [6], and made several
Grants (as well as being the grantee of others) in the same
year concerning lands in Rawtonstall, Ovenden and else-
where. [7] He obtained lands in Stansfield, co. Yorks. by a
grant in 1343, which evidently were a gift or inheritance of
his younger son John (see below) [8].
He entered into a series of transactions in 25 Edw. III
(1351/2) evidently intended to provide for effective
employment of his landed resources, and to ensure the
continuity tenure of his lands and rights by his
heir, the younger Sir Henry. A direct grant of lands to his
son Henry was made in or about 1349 [9], and a further grant
of the manor of Soothill to chaplains evidences his intent
to have the caput of his holdings pass following his death
to his heir [10].
He probably died ca. 1352, as his son Sir Henry was seeking
seisin of his lands around that time (see below).
1. Sir Henry de Soothill, of Soothill, co. Yorks. & c.,
eldest son and heir, had a grant from his father of lands
in Soothill, Rawtonstall, Derton, Bolton and Laxton in
1349, and also of ‘an annual rent of 40 marks from the
manor of Soothill’. He then made a grant of his manor of
Laxton to Sir John Geffray and Sir John de Croxton
(‘chaplains’) in 1350 [9]. He succeeded his father
possibly in or before 1352, when he is stated to have
appointed an attorney ‘attorney for livery of seisin in
his lands tenements and manors of Sutill', Benton' and
Routonstal' ‘ [11]. He entered into an indenture with
William de Fyncheden 32 Edw. III (1358/9) concerning
rents from 80 acres in Soothill granted to the vicar of
the church of Batley, co. Yorks., which was probably the
same land granted by his father in 1351/2 to William de
Skargill [12].
He made a grant in 1362/3 for his life only of his manor
of Rawtonstall, co. Yorks. to his younger son James for
an annual rent of 10 ½ marks. [13] He soon thereafter
(1363) granted his manor of Soothill together with
Chidsall, Heckmondwike and other property to his eldest
son Sir Henry in return for a payment of rent for his
remaining life. [14] In connection with this grant,
he appointed Richard de Pillay as his attorney to deliver
the manor of Soothill [15]. He married Joan _________,
identified in Visitation pedigree of Soothill as Joan
FitzWilliam [the assignment of this surname, and
placement of Joan in the FitzWilliam family of
Sprotborough, is unsubstantiated outside the Visitation
record at present].
He probably died soon thereafter, but certainly no later
than 1366 [16].
1. Sir Henry de Soothill, of Soothill, co. Yorks. He
received a grant from his father in 1363 ‘ to Henry
his son, knight, of all his manor of Soothill etc and
also of a field [campus] called Gepfeld' Cowehaye and
le Rydying' in return for annual rent for the
remainder of the grantors life ‘ [14]. He succeeded
his father soon after this grant, as in 1366 an
attorney (Richard de Rogelay) was appointed to deliver
seisin of the manor of Soothill to ‘Sir Henry de
Sowtyll, knight’ [16]. He married Denise (or
Dionisia). He died in or before 49 Edw III (1375/6),
when his widow Denise had remarried Sir Thomas de
Markenfield [17]. She died after 1385/6, but before a
regrant of the manor of Soothill in 1409/10 (see
below).
1. Henry de Soothill, esq., of Soothill, co. Yorks.
He succeeded his father in or before 1375/6, when
he made a quitclaim as ‘ Henry, son of Henry de
Suthill' knight, to Thomas de Merkyngfeld', knight
and Dionisia his wife, of all rights in the manor
of Soothill during the life of the said Dionisia’
[17]. He was then the esquire of Sir Thomas de
Ros, Lord Ros, from whom he received a grant of
100s in 1375 [18], followed in 1 Ric II (1377/8)
by a grant for life of an annual rent of 10 marks
‘from his manor of Rosse’ [19]. He made a further
grant in 9 Ric II (1385/6) to his mother, ‘Lady
Denise de Merkynfeld’, of rents from the manor of
Soothill of 12 marks per year, for which purpose
he granted the manor to his uncle Gerard de
Soothill and others [20]. His mother probably
died in or before 11 Hen IV (1409/10), in which
year he granted the manor of Soothill, together
with Lawton and other manors, to his brother
Robert Soothill and others [21]. He was living
in 9 Hen VI (1430/1), when he attorned William
Burton of Gomersall to deliver seisin of the manor
of Soothill [22].
[Ancestor of Soothill of Soothill]
2. Robert de Soothill. He received a grant of manor
of Soothill, together with Lawton and other
manors, together with others, from his brother
Henry de Soothill, esquire [21].
2. James de Soothill, of Rawtonstall and Heckmondwike,
co. Yorks. [13]. He received a grant of a messuage
and lands in Heckmondwike from John de Heckmondwike,
1369/70. [23]
3. Sir Gerard de Soothill, of Redbourn, co. Lincs.,
younger son. He was enfeoffed in two parts of the
manor of Redbourn by John de Beckingham and Beatrice
his wife, 1371 [24]. Grantee of the manor of Soothill
and other lands in 1385/6, together with others, from
his nephew Henry de Soothill for an annual rent
payable to Lady Denise de Markenfield, formerly wife
of his deceased brother Sir Henry de Soothill [20].
He was identified in a deed of 3 Oct 1392, as 'dominus
de Midgley' [25]. Sheriff of co. Lincoln, 1402 [24].
He married _______ Salvayn [named Muriel in Yorks.
visitation], daughter of Sir Gerard Salvayn of North
Duffield and Herswell, co. Yorks. He died 1 August
1410 [26].
1. Sir Gerard Soothill, of Redbourn, co. Lincs. and
Midgley and Brearley Hall, co. Yorks., b. 14 Sept
1398. Proved his age, 5 Hen VI (1427/8), although
this may be an error for 5 Hen V (1418/9) [24], [26]
[Ancestor of Soothill of Redbourn, and Lacy of
Brearley]
2. John Soothill, of West Rasen, co. Lincs. [24]
[Ancestor of Soothill of Everingham]
3. Henry Soothill, esq. Evidently the ‘Henry
Sotehill’, king’s attorney who prosecuted Henry
Courtenay, Esq. and Thomas Hungerford in January
1468/9, leading to their execution. [24], [27]
[Ancestor of Soothill of Stokefaston]
2. John de Sothill, of Laxton, co. Yorks. His father Sir
Henry entered into an agreement in 1324/5 with Sir
Richard de Moseley for the marriage of his younger son
John to Helen/Elaine de Moseley [6], and made several
grants (as well as being the grantee of others) in the
same year concerning lands in Rawtonstall, Ovenden and
elsewhere. [7] He obtained lands, messuages and other
property in Stansfield, co. Yorks. by gift or inheritance
from his father, which he mortgaged ‘ to Beatrice widow
of Thomas de Lascy, price of redemption being £10
sterling’ [8].

Hello All,
Additional evidence has been found which should assist in resolving the
problem (previously discussed in other threads) involving the Soothills of
Soothill and the FitzWilliam family of Sprotborough [1]. The primary problems
identified previously are those of identification [i.e., of Joan 'FitzWilliam'
as wife of Sir Henry de Soothill, ca. 1350] and chronology [the Joan of the
Soothill and FitzWilliam Visitation pedigrees could not be the daughter of
Sir William FitzWilliam, d. 1398, and his wife Maud Cromwell].
In the record digests of the PRO, I find the following:
1. Nottinghamshire Archives: Savile of Rufford: Deeds and Estate Papers
' FILE [no title] - ref. DD/SR/26/77 - date: 12 Hen IV [1410-11]
[from Scope and Content] Grant by Henry Sothyll' to Sir John Fitzwilliam,
Randolf Fitzwilliam, Sir William Scote, perpetual vicar of the church of
Dewsbery, and Sir John Dewsbery, chaplain, of his manor of Rawtonstall'
Blackhagh, with all lands thereto appurtenant in Stansfeld'
(Rawtonstall, Yk Blackshaw, Yk Stansfield, Yk) '
2. [Same Archives:]
' FILE [no title] - ref. DD/SR/26/83 - date: 1 Hen V [1413-14]
[from Scope and Content] Quitclaim by John Fitzwilliam, knight, Randolf
Fitzwilliam, and John Dewsbery, chaplain, in favour of Henry de Sotyll'
and Joan his wife of their claim to the manor of Rowtonstall' and
Blakschage with lands and tenements thereto appurtenant in Stansfeld'
(Rawtonstall, Yk Blackshaw, Yk Stansfield, Yk) '
It can be reasonably inferred, given the above cited records and the
Visitation pedigrees, that Joan FitzWilliam was married to Henry de Soothill -
the problem was 'merely', which Henry de Soothill? The problem was not the
proper placement of Joan in the FitzWilliam pedigree, but that of Henry
de Soothill in the Soothill/Sothill pedigree. I would submit the following
is most likely the correct arrangement (numbered references are to the
Soothill pedigree from the first post in this thread):
1. 1. 2. Sir Henry de Soothill
d. ca. 1352
______________I______________
I I
1. 1. 2. 1. 1. 1. 2. 2.

d. 1363.6 I Moseley
_______I_______________________________________________
I I I
1. 1. 2. 1. 1. 1. 1. 2. 1. 2. 1. 1. 2. 1. 3.
Sir Henry = Denise James de Soothill Sir Gerard
d. ca. 1375 I I
I I
I V
I
1. 1. 2. 1. 1. 1.
Henry de Soothill, Esq. William = Maud
d. aft 1410 FitzWilliam I Cromwell
I d. 1398 I
I_________ __________I
I I
Henry Soothill = Joan FitzWilliam
This placement is some 4 generations later than the Visitation pedigree
reflects. It is certainly more palatable from a chronological point of view;
unfortunately, a FitzWilliam descent (and a Plantagenet connection via
Hamelin, Earl of Surrey) are lost to the descendants of Sir Gerard Soothill
of Redbourn (1. 1. 2. 1. 3. above).
Any comment or criticism of the above is welcome, as are certainly any
other details as to any known issue (esp. a daughter Joan) of William
FitzWilliam and Maud Cromwell outside the Visitation record.
Good luck, and good hunting.
John

In addition to the info in your great post, might I suggest that the
Beatrice Sowtell who married Sir Thomas Markenfield (HS v. 16, p196)is the
daughter of Sir Henry de Soothill (d. 1375/6) by Denise (d 1385-1410). The
father of Thomas Markenfield, another Thomas Markenfield by dau. of John
Miniott, is Denise's second husband (m. by 1376). Beatrice's brothers
would be Henry de Soothill and Robert de Soothill, both mentioned in your
very informative msg.
In John Ravilious' post on same subject, he moves the Henry Soothill/Joan
FitzWilliam into the Soothill of Sothill line. This is interesting, but
does anyone have the Soothill of Sothill line that takes off after Henry de
Soothill, s. of Soothill/....,Denise? Or how Soothill/FitzWilliam connects
to John Sotel of Sotell Hall (b. c1500) who married Alice the dau. of Robert
Neville of Leversege?
Cheers,
Kevan
In your reconstruction of the Soothill pedigree to place
Soothill/FitzWilliam in correct alignment, you subordinate
Soothill/FitzWilliam as son of Henry de Soothill, Esq. who died after 1410.
However, you mention in your other posting that this same Henry de Soothill
who died after 1410 was in fact still living in 1430/1 when he attorned
William Burton of Gomersall to deliver seisin of the manor of Soothill.
Would it not work a little more comfortably if you remove one generation by
equating father and son?
Cheers,
Kevan

Dear Kevan,
Thanks for the kind words; I'm glad the prior posts were
of use on your end of this problematic pedigree.
Given the information provided re: the grants of 1410/11
and later between the Soothill and FitzWilliam families, I
have made the changes in the Soothill family pedigree posted
originally in this thread as follows below. The main thrust
of which places the 1430/1 transaction as undertaken by
Henry Soothill, son of Henry de Soothill, Esq. to whom this
transaction was originally ascribed.

1.1.2.1.1.1.
[NEW] He conveyed his manor of Rawtonstall and other
lands to Sir John FitzWilliam of Sprotborough,
probably in connection with a marriage arrangement
between his son and heir Henry Soothill and the
sister of Sir John:

1.1.2.1.1.1.1.
Henry Soothill, of Soothill, co. Yorks. He was
married to Joan, evidently sister of Sir John
FitzWilliam of Sprotborough, co. Yorks. and daughter
of Sir William FitzWilliam (d. 8 Apr 1398) and his
wife Maud Cromwell [CP, FitzWilliam; MC 5; Visitation
of Yorkshire, pedigree of FitzWilliam of Sprotborough].
Evidence of the reconveyance of the manors of
Rawtonstall, co. Yorks. and others as part of the
marriage settlement upon Henry Soothill and his
wife Joan:

' FILE [no title] - ref. DD/SR/26/83 - date:

with lands and tenements thereto appurtenant in
Stansfeld' (Rawtonstall, Yk Blackshaw, Yk

He was living in 9 Hen VI (1430/1), when he attorned
William Burton of Gomersall to deliver seisin of the
manor of Soothill [22].

The Sir John FitzWilliam who was party to the grants of
1410/1 and 1413/4 was the lord of Emley and Sprotborough,
co. Yorks., who succeeded his father Sir William. Sir John
FitzWilliam d. 5 July 1417 [MC 5 p. 171, citing Clay,
Extinct and Dormant Peerages of the Northern Counties,
pp. 77-8]. The note in MC 5 states,
' Clay, 77-78, says dau. Joan d. y.,... '
This is a reference to a daughter of Sir John, and
not his sister [for whom further documentation is being
sought].
Thanks for pointing out the chronological problem that
resulted.
