Hi List --

I am trying to document my gateway ancestor, Edward Foulke. I have him
mentioned in Gary Boyd Roberts book on 600 Royal.

I would however, like to document his line through original records as well
as the primary records.

I am a member of the Order of the Crown of Charlemagne in the United States
through Edward Foulke.

Thank you,

Chris Smithson

You didn't actually ask a question but I presume your question is something
like "How do I do it?"
The first step is to consult the secondary works you can and see what
sources they claim or don't claim to have used in the reconstruction.

You might post what you have with sources cited here.

He's among the cluster of Pennsylvania Welsh with alleged descends from
Dafydd ap Llywelyn (and hence from King John) appearing in RD500 and
subsequent editions. Some or all of them have been discussed here
before, and I believe some of them were concretely disproved.
Richardson's _Plantagenet Ancestry_ simply omits all descendants of
Dafydd ap Llywelyn. For them Roberts seems to rely only on American-side
works (a genealogy published in 1940, and the book _Merion in the Welsh
Tract_, published in 1896) whose quality is unknown to me. The articles
Roberts cites on the Yale family's descents from this line in TAG in the
1970s and 1980s may proved some entry into the primary sources for the
medieval Welsh part of the line, but the immediate ancestry of Foulke
and the other Pennsylvania Welsh might be difficult to verify in
available primary sources. Bartrum will probably be important here, but
I don't know if he overlaps with and supports the alleged ancestries of
these Pennsylvania Welsh.

Stewart Baldwin has looked closely at these Pennsylvania Welsh; he would
be the best one to consult.

Hi Group --

I am trying to document the ancestral lineage of Edward Foulke, one of
several Pennsylvania Welsh. I have RD600 and Douglas Richardson's book
on Plantagenet Ancestry as well as a few others.

What I am looking for is copies of the cited sources that both Roberts,
Richardson and others used to compile this lineage together.

Here is a list that I have compiled together that I am looking for. If
any of you have copies of these works that would help if I could get
copies of the cited pages and the title page. If you don't have them,
please let me know where I can get copies of the pages that I need.

1. The American Genealogist (TAG) Vol. 32 dated 1956, pp. 71-80; Vol. 56
dated 1980, pp. 101-105.

2. Journal of Royal and Noble Genealogy, Vol I dated 1995, pp. 14-26.

3. Clarence V. Roberts, Ancestry of Clarence V. Roberts and Frances A.
(Walton) Roberts dated 1940, pp. 69-82.

4. T. A. Glenn's "Merion in the Welsh Tract" dated 1896, reprinted 1970,
pp. 80-81, 94-95

5. Bartrum 1, "Welsh Genealogies" pp. 446-447, 51, 727

6. Bartrum 2, "Welsh Genealogies" pp. 1415-1416, 116, 1486

Thank you all for your help.

Sincerely,

Chris Smithson

One thing I notice right off, is that they pair up some "Joan Cherleton"
with John the 6th Lord Strange of Knockyn.

Douglas in MCA has this John with a single wife married in his non-age, Maud
de Mohen, who left his widow, she remarried. So sometimes looking at the
older generations are enough to upset the apple cart.

I have that Joan Cherleton, daughter of Sir Edward Cherleton and
Eleanor Holand died 17 Spetember 1425 married Sir John Grey K.G., Earl
of Tankerville who was killed at the battle of Bauge on 22 March 1421.
My source is Jones, Morris Charles, The Feudal Barons of Powys
(London, J. Russell Smith, 1868), p. 114.

It appears someone has conflated John Strange with John Grey.

Just ignore this, except that the source might help with your problem.
I have conflated two Joan Cherletons. There could have been another
earlier one who was the first wife of John Strange, I have no idea.
