Did you ever get any info on this family? I think we have the same problem.

From my notes:
------------------------------------

This family (in the earlier generations) is a mess. Mass disagreements in
the various data sources. Jacobus cites many conflicts in the research for
the ancestry of Thomas Bliss the immigrant.

1 THOMAS BLISS
Born about 1554, born about 1550/60, possibly in Oakehampton,
Belstone Parish, Devon, England, died about 1635/40 per Ancient Windsor.
Married ALICE SMITH. (ref: LDS Ancestral Files, 1993; Ancient Windsor -
Stiles, Vol 2, pg 107). Thomas and Alice had:

2 i THOMAS BLISS, born 1580/85, Painswick, Gloucester, England. Born
in Belstone, Devon, England per Ancient Windsor.

2 THOMAS BLISS (Thomas1) or he was the son of John Bliss who died in
1617 who was the son of William and Elizabeth Bliss, William was said to be
the son of Richard Bliss.
Born after 1587, based on the fine he paid for not training,
Painswick, Gloucester, England, died 1650/51, Hartford, Connecticut.
Married 18 Oct 1621, St. Nicholas, Gloucester, England, MARGARET HULINS,
born 15 July 1595, Gloucester, England, died 28 Aug 1684, Springfield,
Massachusetts; daughter of John Hulins and Margaret Lawrence. Thomas was an
early (1639/40) but not original settler of Hartford. He resided first in
that part of Boston, Massachusetts called the mount, afterwards Braintree
and now part of Quincy, but this is disputed by Jacobus. On 4 Mar 1646/7 he
was fined for not training. After his death his widow moved with all of her
children except Thomas and Ann to Springfield, Massachusetts. (ref: Savage,
Vol I, pg 200-202; Torrey, pg 78, which shows Margaret as a second wife;
HH&RF, pg 476-480; Bliss Gen, Vol I, pg 27-32; Pope's Pioneers, pg 55; TAG,
July 1976, pg 202, Oct 1984, pg 202; LDS Ancestral Files, 1993; Ancient
Windsor, vol 2, pg 107 which states his wife was Margaret Lawrence)

Does your source discuss why Henry was thought to be grandson of Philip?

What evidence is there to connect the Devon family with that of Northants?

What is the evidence for this first marriage of Thomas?

> *2nd Wife of Thomas BLISS:

This woman is identical to the third wife, the surname Lawrence being
simply a (bad) guess of nineteenth century genealogists.

There are two obvious problems here. The first is that they could not
possibly have married in 1612-5 in Hartford, or anywhere in New England for
that matter. That the Thomas Bliss that married Margaret Hulings of
Gloucester was the Rehoboth settler is generally accebted, and I know of no
reason to reject it. That the Thomas that married Margaret Hulings was
from Devonshire is, as far as I am aware, entirely without contemporary
evidence. Does your source have any reason for drawing this conclusion,
other than simply the similarity of names?

I am not familiar with George of Newport, and no of no reason for making
him brother of Thomas of Rehoboth. Perhaps it is solely George's
Devonshire origins (are they well documented) that led to Thomas being
assigned there as well.

This line looks to me like an attempt to link three entirely unrelated
families, Northants, Devon and Gloucs, simply because of the shared
surname. I would love to see any contemporary sources which support the
line, but won't hold my breath.
