Dear All,

The ongoing Echyngham thread has caused me to look again at the Hoos.

CP 6:561-5 has this construction:

1.Sir Thomas Hoo (d 1420)
m (1) Eleanor Felton
2.(a) Sir Thomas Hoo K.G. Baron Hoo of Hoo
m (1) Elizabeth dau. Nicholas Wychingham
3.(a) Anne Hoo m Sir Geoffrey Boleyn
m (2) Eleanor dau. Lionel Lord Welles
3.(b) Anne Hoo m Sir Roger Copley
3.(c) Eleanor Hoo m (1)Thomas Echyngham (2)Sir James Carew
3.(d) Elizabeth Hoo m (1)Thomas Massingbird (2)John Devenish
m (2) Unknown
2.(b) Thomas Hoo

CP goes onto say this about Sir Thomas Hoo, Baron Hoo.
"His immediate heir male was his brother of the half blood, Thomas Hoo,
who died s.p. or s.p.m., 8 October 1486. His daughters and coheirs were,
by the said Elizabeth [Wychingham], Anne, aged 30 and more at her father's
death; and by the said Eleanor [Welles], Anne, aged 8, Eleanor, aged 6,
and Elizabeth, aged 4 and more."

I understand no name is given for the second wife of the first Sir Thomas
Hoo d 1420.

From Miscellanea Et Heraldica Vol I page 332 (Finch family)

1.William Echyngham m Alice Batisford
2.(a) Joane m William Rikell judge
2.(b) Elizabeth m Sir Thomas Hoo, 2nd Sir Thomas Lewknor

From multiple sources we also have a second marriage of William Echyngham
to Joan FitzAlan with two children. [AR7 59-35, MCS 88-10, PA2
Etchingham-8]

1. William Echyngham m Joan FitzAlan
2.(a) Sir Thomas m Margaret Knyvett
2.(b) Joan m Sir John Baynton

The will of Sir Thomas Echyngham (1401-1444) refers to his sister
Elizabeth Lewkenor and [nephew] Thomas Hoo.

"Residuu oim bonoz meoz non legatoz decimis meis pimit plenarie psolutis
Do &
lego Margarete Uxori mei Thome Lewkenore militi Dne Elizabeth Lewkenore
sorori mei Thome Echyngham filio meo Henrici priori priorat de Coumbewelle
Thome Hoo Rico Wakhurst Juniori & Johi Asheburnham quos constituo & ordino
executores meos ad disponend & exequend presens testamentum meu & ultima
voluntatem mea prout ei melius viderint expedire Et Johem ffortescu &
Rogeru
ffenys Milites quos constituo & ordino supuisores hui testameti &
voluntatis
mee predicte."

I have previously been in error in suggesting Elizabeth Wychingham was in
fact Elizabeth Echyngham, I now believe these sources demonstrate
Elizabeth Echyngham was the second wife of Sir Thomas Hoo d 1420 and the
mother of Thomas Hoo d 1486. While it is certain that Sir William
Echyngham was the father of Elizabeth, I do not believe it has been
adequately proved yet that Alice Batisford was her mother.
