You are generally on the right track about Delariver, but if you are tracing a descent through William Thornton, settler in Virginia, the better view is that his origin and ancestry are unproved. The theory that William was a great-grandson (sometimes called grandson, but that is chronologically impossible) of Francis Thornton of Thornton-on-the-Hill, Yorkshire, is based on the facts that William named a son Francis and called his plantation The Hills. This is certainly suggestive, but falls short of acceptable proof without more, and so far as I know no one has found more.

Hmm.... yes, I'm tracing my descent through the Thorntons. My family
kept really good records all the way back to William Thornton of "The
Hills" who migrated to Virginia. His daughter Francis married Alice
Savage. I am pretty sure it's correct that William Thornton of the
Hills, who came over on his ship "Mary Jane" and started a plantation
in Virginia called "Fall Hill" that is still owned by Thornton
descendents.

Sorry, I meant to say his "son" Francis married Alice Savage. :)
