He ruled in Mecklenburg together with his brothers, Albrecht and Magnus.
Even though he ruled for only four years, he was very effective. He acted
strongly against criminals and was often personally involved when they
were executed; apparently he had a rope hanging on his saddle especially
for that purpose and he owes his nicknames of 'the Executioner' and
'the Hanger' to this. Nevertheless, he was a very good ruler. He died
from a fall from his horse at a tournament.
