Complete Peerage 10 (1945): 667 (sub Poynings) provides a good account
of the life of Thomas Poynings, 2nd Lord Poynings of Basing (died
1429). This account states that Thomas Poynings married (2nd) before
24 November 1399, Philippe Mortimer, widow successively of John
Hastings, Earl of Pembroke (died 1389) and Richard Arundel, Earl of
Arundel (beheaded 1397), and daughter of Edmund Mortimer, Earl of
March, by his wife, Philippe, daughter of Lionel, Duke of Clarence.
The editor cites a Patent Roll item for the date of the marriage of
Thomas Poynings and Philippe Mortimer.
It would appear that the marriage of Thomas Poynings and Philippe
Mortimer actually took place before 6 December 1398, on which date
King Richard II wrote a letter to Lady Poynings, who he styled
"treschiere et bien amee cousine," inviting her to keep Christmas with
the King and Queen at Eltham [Reference: M.D. Legge, Anglo-Norman
Letters & Petitions (Anglo-Norman Text Soc. 3) (1941): 69–70].
I note that elsewhere in Complete Peerage 1 (1910): 245 (sub Arundel),
it is stated that Philippe Mortimer married (3rd) "after Apr. 1398"
Thomas Poynings. While this statement is probably correct, no
documentation is provided to verify this information.
