Hello all,

In an old Dutch genealogical magazine (Taxandria 1911) I found some
information about Anne Theresia Johnstone and her ancestors. She was born in
London July 11. 1704 and died in the Netherlands June 30. 1798. She was
married to a dutchman, Christiaen Huyghens. She had some children and in her
old days she wrote a letter to her granddaughter, who was about to marry
with a dutch noble-man. In this letter she wrote about her ancestry, to show
to her granddaughter, that she descended from a very important and noble
Scottish family.

My question is, what is truth and was is fiction, or, what is her real
ancestry.

In the above mentioned magazine (Taxandria, edition 1911) it is said that
her father was David Johnstone, born in 1672 and married to Winnefred
Theresia Andries. He died in the Netherlands.
David served as a captain in a Scottish regiment, serving under the Duke of
Marlborough.

Anne Theresia Johnstone wrote to her granddaughter, that her father's family
belonged to the greatest in Scotland. Her father's father, she wrote, was
Laurence Johnstone of Elphingston, lord of Perth. (Note: Perhaps Oliphant?
See below!) The oldest brother of her father (Laurence) became lord of
Reverdown.

In a reprint of Burke's Dormant and Extinct Peerages I found the family of
Johnstone, Marquess of Annandale. I found Sir James Johnstone, of Westerhall
(page 301). He married first Margareth Johnstone, a distant relative with no
issue. He married second the Hon. Eupemia Oliphant, daughter of Laurence,
4th Lord Oliphant, by the lady Margareth Hay, daughter of George, 6th Earl
of Errol.
Burke's Dormant and Extinct Peerages gives also a tree on Oliphant, Lord
Oliphant.

What is the link between the information in Burke's and the information in
Taxandria.

I wish to everybody a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Greetings,

Frans

**** A bit confused, it seems. The Johnstones of Elphinstone were an
Edinburgh family, and not connected to the Earls of Perth whose
surname was Elphinstone.
A Laurence Johnstoun (spellings vary) was a founder in Edinburgh at
the time, so may be the person mentioned.

Gordon Johnson.

Dear Frans,
I must have missed your original request. Perhaps I can help a little bit.
Johnstone, of Elphinston (Elphinstone) is correct, forget about Oliphant.
The Earls of Perth belonged to the Drummond family not Elphinstone.

I have another line of descent for Anna Theresia Johnston (Johnstone) of
Elphinston (Elphinstone) Check Nederland's Adelsboek 1988 page 207

Anna Theresia Johnston(e)
married Christiaan Huygens
parents of
Catharina Constantia Huygens
born 3 November 1737 Boxtel
buried 28 September 1810 St.Oedenrode
married 1765 (St.Oedenrode ?)
Willem Vincent Bangeman
born 13 October 1738 Hamburg
died 12 February 1803 Batavia, Dutch East Indies
son :
Jhr. Chritiaan Bangeman Huygens
born 31 October 1772 St.Oedenrode
died 29 March 1857 Maastricht
married (1) 1802 Paris
Countess Elise de Danneskiold-Lovendal
daughter of Francois Xavier Joseph, Count af Danneskiold-Lovendal
and Charlotte Marguerite Elisabeth de Bourbon-Charolais, Demoiselle de
Bourbon
born 18 May 1777 Versailles
died 11 October 1812 Paris
married (2) 16 February 1815 Maastricht
Constance Wilhelmina Vrijthoff,
daughter of Prof. Dr. Johannes Bernardus Vrijthoff
and Jacqueline Hermanna Eleonora Hesselt van Dinter
born 4 March 1772 Maastricht
died 9 April 1868 Maastricht
six children from the first marriage, which links them to the Royal House of
France.

Now the past.
James Johnstone, of Johnstone
Earl of Hartfell (in 1643)
married (1) Lady Margaret Douglas
married (2) Elizabeth Johnstone, daughter of Sir Samuel Johnstone, of
Elphinstone
married (3) Lady Margaret Hamilton

Here is mention of Johnstone, of Elphinstone, and we may have to accept that
these were
a branch of the Johnstone family. I wonder whether Lord of Reverdown is a
'Lord of the manor' type title? Perhaps someone knows more?
Best wishes

Did any of these Johnstones emigrate to America ?...and if so...where ?

Thank you,
