I have recently found a line of my ancestry going back to the immigrants
Thomas Barnes II (1591-1689) and his son Thomas Barnes III (1623-1691), both
from Essex; they settled in Connecticut.
According to our friends at FamilySearch, this is a royal line going back to
Edward III via John of Gaunt.
I am assuming the line is bogus--like my twenty-plus other bogus royal
lines! :-)
Is there a confirming/disconfirming source?
Thanks and cheers,

That's what I'm trying to determine. :-)

This one claims to be from Barking, Essex. It settled in Connecticut, and
has nothing to do with Virginia that I've seen.

Ancestral File has mine born 26 Aug 1623 and dying 10 Jun 1691 in
Middletown, most likely the same fellow.
>He married Mary/Elizabeth? unknown (71) (A269), 1642 (?).
AF has a couple wives, including Mary Andrews, whom he married in 1662/3.
>Children:
Hmmm... your list of children doesn't list an Ebenezer Barnes, 1676-1756.
That son is the one through whom I'm allegedly connected to Thomas. The date
of his birth doesn't match well with the dates you give for Thomas'
children, so possibly the Ancestral File has assigned Ebenezer to the wrong
parents.
The Ancestral File record on this family is incredibly garbled, with people
listed as married after they died, and one ancestor born approximately 1670
listed as "still living." :-(
Thanks,

This is to illustrate what a widespread name this is, and has been, in the
British Isles.

It would be nice to sort the Farmington BARNES family out, but it is
earlier, where Ancestry File has a connection through an unnamed
generation of BARNES, then an unnamed BARNES marrying Dorothy BIGOD. I
pursued the origin of this link through the LDS records, and found
that it was basically a tail-chase.
"I got it from my aunt Mary. I got it from my nephew."
No one cited any original source for believing that Dorothy BIGOD had
any relationship with a BARNES.
Basically, what AF has is this:
Dorothy = ?
BIGOD BARNES
1529-
|
? = ?
BARNES
|
Thomas
BARNES
1591-
|
Thomas =1st Mary & =2 Mary
BARNES * ANDREWS
1623-1691
the first Mary was hanged as a witch in January 1662/3, apparently the
last witch executed in Connecticut
This is an extremely flimsy connection, and I'd love to see some
documentation/justification for it, but none has yet been forthcoming.
