I was looking through Ancestral Roots 7 last night, and came across a
problematic set of relationships.

In tracing the Wake family, Baldwin Wake is given as wife Agnes,
daughter of William de Hommet (who d.ca.1213) and his wife Lucy.

In the Fougeres descent, William de Fougeres is shown marrying Agnes,
daughter of William de Hummet, Constable of Normandy (d.c.1189) and wife
Lucy.

The only account of Hummet/Hommet I cound find was in Crispin's Falaise
Roll, but this seemed to be based on reasonable sources. It shows
William de Hommet, husband of Lucy, succeeding his father Richard (or
was it Robert, I am going from memory) as Constable of Normandy in 1189,
and passing the title on to his grandson William in about 1210 (with the
younger William first appearing as Constable in 1213). The older
William is said to have had several daughters, but only one (not Agnes)
is named.

So, is this the same Agnes, daughter of William and Lucy that married
both Fougeres and Wake, (if so, the birth date given Baldwin Wake's son
must be adjusted to make it later than William de Fougeres' death), or
is one of these (presumably the Fougeres Agnes) sister rather than
daughter of Constable William?

As a side note, is the descent of this family from John, nephew of
William the Conqueror sound, or simply another of Crispins many flights
of fancy?

I good account of the Humet family may be found in Gerald Paget's
Baronage, family 296:

Richard de Humet, Constable of Normandy, had a grant from Henry II in
1173/4 of lordships in Lincoln, Rutland, Northants, Bucks and Norfolk.
Died 1181; married Agnes, daughter & heir of Jordan de Say. Issue:
William, Enguerrand, Jordan.

William de Humet, succeeded his father in all lands, but his English lands
were seized in 1204. He was living 1205. Married Lucy, named in 1184.
Issue:
Richard, William, Jordan, Henry, Thomas, Enguerrand, Agatha and Agnes.

Agatha de Humet
m. 1) William de Fougeres, 2) Fulk Paynell, Lord of Hambie

a. Geoffrey de Fougeres
b. Clemence de Fougeres, died 1252; m 1) Alan de Dinan, 2)
Ranulph,

Agnes de Humet, m. Baldwin Wake.

Does Paget trace them back to the son of Bishop Odo?

Not only does this clarify my confusion, but looking back at my source,
AR7, this is exactly what it says (it does not name both Agnes, as I
stated in my original post). Off to the optometrist I go . . . .

William Farrer does in *Honors & Knights Fees* vol.III, 281-285 and see also
81-82. This is one of the references promised. The other to VCH Oxford I
will leave as Ronny Bodine seems to have provided that information.

I have just had an opportunity to check the VCH Oxford. In vol.6 221, 303,
41 etc. it gives Agnes de Say as wife of Richard de Humez. She was the
daughter of Jordan de Say and Lucy de Rumilly (or de Aulnay) daughter of
Robert de Rumilly.

Paget in his Baronage (family 296) does not carry the Humets back beyond
Richard de Humet, Constable of Normandy. If such a relationship was
proven in original sources as Paget used to prepare his Baronage he would
have made reference to it.
