According to wikipedia, "wierd fiction" writer China Miéville "grew up with his sister Jemima and mother Claudia. His mother was a translator, writer and teacher, and the daughter of Leo Claude Vaux Miéville, whose wife Youla (née Harrison) was granddaughter of Edward Littleton, 4th Baron Hatherton."

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/China_Mi%C3%A9ville

Assuming this is correct, despite the omission of most names in the line of descent, I see that the 4th Lord Hatherton was a grandson of a Lady Margaret Percy, who should have a James IV line through Stewart, Drummond, Montgomerie, Seton, Cunnynghame, Stuart-Wortley_Mackenzie, and Percy.

But are there any Charles II or James II (of England) lines?

The intervening generations are given here, based on Burke's Peerage, 2003:

Interesting.

The Scots lines seem pretty well-represented in other descents, as Youla Harrison's father Stewart Sandbach Harrison shows up in Geni with connections to Robertson of Kincardine (and Kindeace), Howeson, Mackenzie (various families), Stewart, Grant, Munro, Fraser, Ogilvy, Campbell, Dunbar, Falconer, Gordon, Ross, Douglas, Bayne, Bethune, Forbes, and basically what-not.

Youla's an awful name ... why not spell it Eula?

Interesting. Notice that the last four generations were fairly compressed, such that Lilah Littleton, China's great-grandmother, turned 70 the year he was born.

I was born in 1968, and all my great-grandparents were born in the years between 1850 and 1878.

This is a bit of an occasion -- the first time, to my knowledge, that SGM has examined the royal ancestry of someone with whom I'm socially acquainted. China and I have had a number of friendly professional and social interactions over the decades; most recently, early in 2023 I published a new edition of his 1998 debut novel KING RAT, with a new introduction by Tim Maughan.

I don't know anything in detail about China's family, but I can add to Olivier's post below that his mother Claudia Cecilia Vaux Mieville died in 2007, as mentioned here: https://www.theguardian.com/books/2011/may/14/china-mieville-life-writing-genre

I do note with some delight that if Olivier's descent is correct, China is a direct descendant of the remarkable Lady Mary Wortley Montagu (1689-1762), poet, diarist, prolific correspondent, and advocate of smallpox inoculation,
through her daughter Mary who married James Stuart, earl of Bute.

I notice that thePeerage stops short

http://www.thepeerage.com/p14878.htm#i148772

at the Leigh ascent behind Maria Vanneck, wife of Charles Robert /Rowley/ , Knt and 4th Bnt

but this line ascends at least seven more geneations just in the strictly Leigh ascent, not counting any female lines
