Hello All,

The recent discussion re: the Brus family of Skelton &c. brought
up an interesting aside. In looking at Kirkby's Inquest, I noted
under Walton, Yorkshire the following with regard to John (de)
Fairfax:

" Son of Thomas Fairfax of York, who was dead by 1261, by Agnes
daughter and heiress of Henry de Sezevaux, mayor of York temp. Henry
III (Sir Thomas Widdrington's MS., fo. 101). By his wife Clare,
daughter and heiress of William Scott, by Constance, daughter and co-
heiress of Sir Roger Brus of Walton (Thoresby's Ducat. Leod.), John
Fairfax had a son and heir, Thomas Fairfax (York Corporation Papers,
ii., 934), to whom, on the 8th kal. March, 1322, archbishop Melton
granted, "ad instanciam domini Willelmi de Malebis," licence for
divine service to be celebrated "in capella sua de Walton juxta
Thorparches (Reg. Melton, 156b). " [1]

This Roger de Brus is relatively unknown. In her book on the
Brus family, discussing first the Brus family of Scotland, Ruth
Blakely wrote,

' No younger sons of the Yorkshire Bruses are known to
have fared so well. The younger sons of Peter I, Simon
and Roger, received small grants within the Yorkshire
barony from their brother or nephew; Simon's lands were
at Loftus and Roger's at Walton, one of the Arches
manors.' [2]

This works chronologically with the structure given in the
Kirkby's Inquest footnote re: the descent of Walton to the Fairfax
family. Based on these items, I have sending in a followup message
the descent via Sir Roger de Brus of Walton to the Fairfax family of
Walton, Gilling &c.

This provides an interesting ascent for Prince William (via the
Earls Spencer and the Fairfax family), and the emigrant William
Bladen, among others.

Cheers,

John

Hi John,

Just one small addition. Robert, the son of Isabel Brus and Roger
Mauduit, her second husband, took his mother's name and was known as
Robert de Brus. It is possible that he was the ancestor of the Brus
family of Pickering, Yorkshire whose origin is only conjectured. Ruth
Blakely in her book 'The Brus Family in England and Scotland,
1100-1295' suggests that this possibility, although it's not the only
one [1].

His parentage is confirmed by two deeds in the Percy Chartulary. In
the first, Robert de Brus is named as the son and heir of Roger
Mauduit "Roberto de Brus, filio et heredi ipsius Rogeri [Mauduit]"
and in the second, William de Percy the son of Henry de Percy and
Isabel de Brus, grants the custody of Nigel, son and heir of Robert de
Plumpton to Roger Mauduit, and gave 10 librates of land in Levington
for the sustenance of Nigel and his wife Ivetta. The deed states that
Isabel de Brus, the wife of Roger Mauduit, is the mother of William de
Percy, and that Robert de Brus is the son of Roger Mauduit [3].

Regards,

John

In the discussion of the manor of Loftus in VCH North Riding of
Yorkshire (vol. 2), there is this footnote:

"Guisbro' Chartul. (Surt. Soc.), ii, 155, 161. William del Fehus of
North Loftus, SON AND HEIR of Robert brother of Simon de Brus, gave
the priory 1 oxgang of land in Boythorpe here (Burton, Mon. Ebor.
348). In 1240 Peter had granted the priory exemption from suit of
court for their lands here (Guisbro' Chartul. [Surt. Soc.], ii, 199)."
