Supposedly they had a daughter Magdalen who married that Anderson Doniphan
who died in 1761 (or thereabouts) in King George County, Virginia.
This Thomas is given sometimes ridiculously as the son of James
Menteith-Dalyell, 3rd Brt by his "wife" Magdalen Dalyell which makes no sense
whatsoever.
I think I even have it writen up in an article, so I'm mocking myself for
being so silly and lazy, as to not realize the problem before.
At any rate. It doesn't take much thought to simply move Thomas back a
generation, however *what* evidence exists that Thomas Monteith is related at
all to the Monteith family of Auldcathy in the first place?
What evidence. That means primary or secondary discounting any and all
"family legends" and online gedcoms :)
I think this line is suspicious and liable to destruction soon... at my
hands. I just need to dig a little more to firm up my thoughts.

You've got this line garbled somewhat. Magdalen Dalyell was not the
wife of Sir James Menteith [later Dalyell], 3rd Baronet - she was his
mother. It was because of her that Sir James took the additional
surname Dalyell and was able to inherit the baronetcy (via an unusual
remainder). See any recent edition of BP for this.
As to Thomas Monteith [sic] and Phillis Gallup, check out the
references cited by Gary Boyd Roberts in RD600, including (but not
limited to) an abstract of a letter from "Thomas Monteith [sic] of
Rappahannock Co., VA, to his brother Sir James Dalyell, 3rd Bt.". GBR
cites Andrew B. W. MacEwen for the development of this line - which is
part of the ancestry of Harry S Truman, among others.

It isn't me who garbled it.
Which is why I pointedly said the connection here was "ridiculous" if you
go back and read my original message.
I take a look for that letter from Thomas to his brother and see if I can
find a decent citation. Thanks.
