Following the discussion of the origin of Morris, I give here a
reproduction of the family tree compiled by a Hervey de Montmorency in
1922 which readers may find of interest. I also have a 12 page
monograph written by Hervey headed _A Memorandum in reply to a work by
J H Round, casting doubts upon the claim of the Morres Family to bear
the Name of de Montmorency_, and it would seem that J H Round was not
to impressed by Hervey's claims. Hervey stated that their name Morres
[e not i] derived from Marisco a name similar to that cited recently
in this discussion group, and not from a Welsh mother, ma Reece, as
someone so humourously implied. This family subsequently changed their
name from Morres back to de Montmorency and descents include the
Viscount Mountmorres (extinct 1951) and Viscounts Frankfort de
Montmorency (extinct 1917)

In the following the name Herve has an acute accent on the 2nd e.
Text in [square brackets] are my remarks. I have not tried to verify
any of this tree.

Since the claim that the Morres family descends from the de
Montmorency family was fraudulent, they couldn't change their name
"back to" de Montmorency.

This name change, which was ratified by Royal Licenses in 1815 and
1816, was based on an invented pedigree whose inaccuracy was exposed
by Round, in his *Feudal England* (1895). The "Memorandum in Reply"
cited above attempts to re-establish the claimed descent, but (since
the descent is based on imaginary connections and misreading and
misunderstanding documents) fails. See the second edition of
Cokayne's *Complete Peerage*, vol. IX, Appendix I (pp. 61-74).
