Hello All,

In a related thread yesterday, I noted the marriage of
Margaret Bosvile, daughter of Thomas Bosvile 'of Edderthorpe',
to William Symmes 'senior' of Barnsley (d. bef 7 Oct 1483) as
documented by William Brown [1]. The identification of Thomas
Bosvile was not detailed, but it appeared likely that he was of
or closely related to the Ardesley (or Gunthwaite) family.

Two pieces of evidence provide the linkage of Edderthorpe to
the Bosviles of Ardsley, and further the close connection of
Richard Symmes of Barnsley to Thomas Bosvile of Ardsley and his
wife, Isabel or Isabella Hastings, his neighbors in Silkstone
parish. First is the following settlement in 1462 re: certain
lands including Edderthorpe, mentioning William Boswell (Bosvile)
of Ardsley (father of Thomas) and John Boswell(Bosvile), rector
of Darfield (brother of Thomas). This represents the settlement
of lands as dower for Isabel Cresacre, 2nd wife of John Bosvile
of Ardsley (d. 1441) who m. 2ndly Henry Langton, Esq. before
1448:

Sheffield Archives: Title Deeds

Settlement

Creation dates: 20 August 1462

By William Norton of Bylburgh (Bilbrough, W.Yk.) to Nicholas
Wortlay, Robert Nevill, John Wodrove, Thomas Everingam, esqs.,
and John Nevill of Leversege (Liversedge, W.Yk.) of his manor of
Newhall (p. Darfield) with all his lands etc in Derfeld
(Darfield), Wombuelhill (Wombwell), Edyrthorp (Edderthorpe),
Mylnhous (Millhouses) and Midylwood (Middlewood) formerly the
property of John Bosewell father of William Bosewell, with a
piece of land called Elyntreflatt at Ederslay (Ardsley), for the
lives of Henry Langton and Isabella his wife, and after their
deaths, the manor etc. to go to Edward fitz William, Robert
Roclyff, John Dawnay and John Bosewell, clerk, in fee simple.

Witnesses; John Sotell, esq., Adamer Burdhed, Thomas Ann, Richard
Syms, William Taillor, etc.

The second document is for the grant of dower to Isabella
Bosvile (nee Hastings), 'late wife of Thomas Bosevile, knight'
in 1490. Note that the document above was witnessed by Richard
Symmes of Barnesley: in the 1490 document below, Richard Symmes
was one of the feoffees.

Sheffield Archives: Spencer Stanhope Muniments [SpSt/1 - SpSt/172]
Deeds concerning Cannon Hall : SpSt/140/1
Grant of dower

Creation dates: 10 Jun 1490

Isabella Bosevile, widow, late wife of Thomas Bosevile, knight,
dec'd., of the first part.

Richard Keresford, Richard Symmes of Barnesley and John Slakk,
feoffees of Thomas Bosevile of all his lands and tenements
in Yorkshire, of the second part.

With the consent of the kinsfolk of John Bosevile, son and heir
of John Bosevile, son and heir of Thomas Bosevile, the feoffees
grant to Isabella, as her dower, 1 messuage in Calthorn, now
called Canonhall, and all lands and other appurtenances, in the
tenure of John Cowden; 2 cottages in Calthorn; a tenement built
on the Cliffhyll, in the tenure of Elizabeth Burnley, widow;
annual rent of 3/10, from a messuage in Ardesley, called
Dawrodes als Wodehede. For life.

Thomas Bosevile, called 'of Edderthorpe' by W. Brown as
previously discussed, was in fact better known as Thomas Bosevile
of Ardsley (d. before 10 Jun 1490). Richard Symmes of Barnsley,
as father in law of Isabel (Hastings) Bosevile's daughter
Margaret and grandfather of their mutual grandchildren William,
Alice, Isabel and Joan, was a natural choice as a feoffee; so to
was Richard Keresford, whose son was evidently the John
Keresford who was married to Isabel's daughter Elizabeth Bosvile.

The family of Thomas Bosvile of Ardsley and his wife Isabel
Hastings is sketched as part of a pedigree of Bosvile in Alice
MacDonald's work on the family [2]. As the followup detailed
pedigree will show, their issue included John Bosvile of
Ardsley, son and heir; Muriel, wife of Sir John Burton of
Kinsley; Elizabeth, wife of John Keresforth (or Keresford);
Hugh Bosvile, rector of Darfield; and other. Ms. MacDonald
did not identify a daughter Margaret; however, we can thank
Mr. Brown for having done so.

I hope the above and the followup pedigree post will be
of interest.

Cheers,

John *

Hello All,

Following is the detailed pedigree as promised. Note that
this traces the Bosvile-Symmes descent only from John Hastings,
Esq. of Elsing and Gressenhall and his wife Anne Morley, whose
descents from Edward I of England (multiple descents for John
Hastings) have been discussed in detail before.

I have traced the descent to the emigrant William Farrar
of Amwell and Hoddesdon, Herts. and of Virginia (d. ca. 1637),
who is known to descend from John Hastings and Anne Morley
through his mother Cecily Kelke. Hopefully other descents
through the Bosvile and Symmes families will be developed.

Cheers,

John
