What is the latest thinking on the ancestry of Gov. Thomas Dudley? I tried looking in the archives where it has been discussed a number of times, but I couldn’t find a clear answer.

Doug in his earlier Plantagenet Ancestry had Gov. Dudley as the great-grandson of Sir John Sutton, 3rd Baron Dudley and his wife Cicely Grey. This was apparently based on the unpublished work of the late Marshal Kirk. Marshal Kirk wrote on SGM in 2003: http://tinyurl.com/ydhs6fwx (suggestive but not convincing to me.)

These articles I believe extend Marshall Kirk’s work:

The Mystery of Thomas Dudley's Paternal Ancestors By H. Allen Curtis http://www.familypage.org/mystdud.pdf and
Roger Dudley’s Father Proved to be Captain Henry Dudley By H. Allen Curtis http://tinyurl.com/la6suhw
(I’m not sure any argument based on marks of cadency can be convincing)

The line no longer appears in Doug’s Royal Ancestry series.

Has the line been disproved?
Is the line probable but unproven?
Has a different paternal ancestry been found for Gov. Dudley?

There is no new information and it has not been disproved.
I am however, aware of a very substantial book on this topic about to be published which has been under development for almost a decade which should shed some light I hope on this topic.

Will you tell us when it has been published -- and the title and author?

It is a very likely line that is not in Douglas Richardson's works because it is not completely proven. About H. Allen Curtis's additions it does have the merit of pretty much eliminating the other second sons of the Sutton-Dudley family as possible candidates for Roger Dudley's father. The crescent clearly indicates a second son of the Sutton-Dudley family to have been Roger Dudley's father.

The author is well known to this list and I'm sure he will announce the availability himself once it goes to print.
