Dear Newsgroup ~

Complete Peerage 7 (1929): 481 (sub Latimer) includes an account of Sir Henry (or Harry) Neville [died 1469], of Isenhampstead (in Chesham), Buckinghamshire, son and heir apparent of George Neville, Knt., 1st Lord Latimer [died 1469].

The following brief information is given regarding the marriage of Sir Henry Neville:

"He married Joan, daughter of John (Bourchier), Lord Berners, by Margaret, daughter and heiress of Sir Richard Berners." END OF QUOTE.

Although the name of the bride is correct, no documentation is provided for this statement. Also no date is given for the marriage.

In recent time, I located a dispensation for this marriage published in Clarke & Zutshi, Supplications from England & Wales in the Registers of the Apostolic Penitentiary, 1410–1503 2 (Canterbury & York Soc. 104) (2014): 4:

Dispensation for marriage of Henry Nevill, nobleman, knight, London diocese & Joan Bourgchier, noblewoman, Winchester diocese dated 25 May 1466.

The dispensation was required for this couple to marry, as they were related in the 4th degree of consanguinity, by virtue of their common descent from King Edward III of England.

Complete Peerage correctly states that Joan Bourchier, widow of Sir Henry Neville, died 7 October 1470, and that she left a will dated 2 October 1470, proved 16 October 1470 (P.C.C. 31 Godyn). A full transcript of Lady Neville's will can be found in North Country Wills 1 (Surtees Soc. 116) (1908): 55–56.

I might note that Complete Peerage incorrectly refers to Joan Bourchier's mother as "Margaret, daughter and heiress of Sir Richard Berners." Joan's mother's given name was actually Margery, not Margaret, as indicated by the following Common Pleas lawsuit which involves the executors of Joan Bourchier's own will. Also Margery's father, Richard Berners, was only an esquire, not a knight.

In Hilary term 1472 John Bourgchier, Lord of Berners, Margery his wife mother of Joan Nevyle widow, Thomas Bourgchier brother of the said Joan, and John Bradshawe, executors of Joan Nevyle, widow, sued Walter Drye, of South Pickenham, Norfolk, yeoman, and others in the Court of Common Pleas regarding various debts. For interest's sake, the following is a list of the 17th Century New World immigrants that descend from Sir Henry (or Harry) Neville and his wife, Joan (or Jane) Bourchier:

William Bladen, Elizabeth Bosvile, George, Giles & Robert Brent, Anne Mauleverer.

In closing, I wish to thank Nathan Murphy for pointing out the Clarke & Zutshi supplication volumes to me. His kindness is much appreciated.

Best always, Douglas Richardson, Salt Lake City, Utah
