Dear all,

The earliest members of the Camoys family to appear in Complete Peerage are:
Ralph de Camoys, son and heir of Ralph de Camoys (d. 1259), by Asceline, heiress of Torpel, Northants, was aged 45 and more at his father's death. Constable of Pevensey Castle 18 July 1264. He was summoned to Parliament 24 Dec. (1264) 49 Hen. III, by writ directed Radulfo de Cameys. Such summons, having issued in rebellion, should not, however, constitute a peerage dignity. He died before 11 Mar. (1276/7) 5 Edw. I, when the writ for his Inq. p. m. is dated.
Complete Peerage, vol. 2 (1912), 506.

It can be shown on chronological grounds that Ralph de Camoys, the younger, was not the son of Asceline de Torpel, but she was actually his wife.

Looking at the family of Torpel, from various sources, it is possible to construct an outline pedigree:

Roger de Torpel I (d. 1176) = Asceline de Waterville (d. aft 1216)
I
Roger de Torpel II (d. 1225) =
I
Roger de Torpel III (d. 1229) = Mabel (d. 1276)
I I
William de Torpel (dsp. 1242) Asceline de Torpel = Ralph de Camoys (d. 1277)
I
John de Camoys (b. ca. 1249)

Roger Torpel III was under age at the death of his father in 1225, but already married, and it is not clear whether he became of age before he died in 1229. He left, by Mabel his wife, two children; William who died under age in 1242 and a daughter and heiress to the Torpel barony, Asceline. I estimate that Asceline was born between 1224 and 1229, so she can hardly have been the mother of Ralph de Camoys the younger who was probably born about 1215 (aged 45 or more in 1259). Asceline was unmarried in 1242 when the king committed her custody and marriage to Ralph Neville, bishop of Chichester. Asceline was the mother of John de Camoys who was born about 1249 (aged 27 in 1276).

Regards,

John
