A bit late for the period, but I thought I'd ask; Does anyone know if the
poet Sir Thomas Browne Son of Thomas Browne and Anne Garraway; died: 19 OCT
1682 in Norwich, Norfolk, England. Married Dorothy
MILEHAM.) bore arms?
His grandson, Buckingham Browne of Essex Co., VA had an imprint of ams in
wax on his 1735 will (ermine, on a bend gules three lions rampant, or), and
I am looking for the origin of said arms.
Thanks!

I was recently delighted to find that Sir Thomas Browne's complete works has
been posted to the web at:
http://penelope.uchicago.edu/index.shtml
Anyone wanting to check the "state of learning" in the 17th century would do
well to read over Browne's works. His "vulgar errors" includes discourses on
such topics as Unicorn horns, stones in frogs heads, the number of eyes a
lamprey has, why do portraits of Adam and Eve depict them with belly buttons etc.
etc.
There is one page there with Sir Thomas Browne's portrait and arms, but not
as you have it, missing the three lions rampent. There are a number of other
Browne families which do have a bend with three lions passent. (eg Viscount
Montague, Baron Kilmaine, Marquess of Sligo etc), but the tincture is usually
sable and argent
Could you cite the sources giving Buckingham Browne as his grandson, I do not
have this person.
Regards,
Adrian
The Cyclopedia of Virginia Biography states that Buckingham Browne was son of
Clement and Mary (Glebe) Browne, was born 31 January 1671/2, and died Feb. 1,
1734/35. Clement is given as son of Sir Thomas.

Thanks for your message.
Re the genealogy of Sir Thomas Browne (1605-1682), all I have is that given
in DNB
In 1641 he [Sir Thomas] married Dorothy, fourth daughter of Edward Mileham of
Burlingham St. Peter. She bore ten children (of whom one son and three
daughters survived their parents), and died two years after her husband,
The son that survived him was an Edward (b. 1644 Norwich d. 1708 Northfleet,
Kent leaving Thomas (1672-1710 sp) +3daus.) Another son was Thomas who is
named in Sir Thomas's correspondence, lived in France, but died around 1667. DNB
does not mention a Clement, but presumable must be one of the issue who dvp -
I will just have to do a bit more research.
many thanks,
Adrian

I have not done original research on this claim. A problem I see with it is
that Clement Browne is supposed to have been born 11 November 1639, but it does
not appear that Sir Thomas Browne married until 1641. (I did not see an entry
for either Thomas or Clement in London Marriage Licenses.)
