>From Little Shelford church:

"In gratia et misericordia dei hic iacent Robertus Frevill armiger
quondam dominus istius villae et Rosa uxor eius qui obiit xo mensis
Aprilis M.CCCCC.XX.II [sic] quoram animabus propicietur deus"

In God's grace and mercy here lie Robert Freville, armiger, sometime
lord of this village, and Rose his wife, who died the tenth day of the
month of April 1522 [?should be 1521] on whose soul may God have mercy.

Also

"Hic iacet Rosa Frevill vidua quondam uxor Roberti Frevill armiger que
obiit vto die Aprill Ano Domini 1529 cuius anime propicietur deus,
Amen"

Here lies Rose Freville, widow, sometime wife of Robert Freville,
armiger, who died the fifth day of April in the Year of our Lord 1529,
on whose soul may God have mercy.

There are a number of arms for Freville monuments recorded from Little
Shelford, including:

Freville (three crescents ermine) impaling Gules, same de cross
crosslets, three lucies hauriant or - for John Freville who married
Ellen Lucy (d 1380) - does any one know from which Lucy family Ellen
came? [cf "Hic iacet Domina Elena Frevill que obiit v kalend Februarii
Anno Dom. 1380 cuius anime propicietur, Amen"]

Freville impaling what appears to be "a field or, on a cross engrailed
[...], five fleurs de lis of the first"

And Freville quartering "or, between a chevron gules, nine cross
crosslets argent (five and four)".

Perhaps these last two blazons might assist in identifying Freville
wives.

I imagine that Ellen de Lucy (died 1380), wife of John de Freville, was
likely a daughter of Sir Geoffrey de Lucy (c. 1288-1346), of Dallington
and Slapton, Northamptonshire, Chelmscott (in Soulbury) and Fulbrook
(in Hogshaw), Buckinghamshire, etc., by his wife, Katherine.

If so, Ellen de Lucy would be a granddaughter of Desiderée (or
Desirée) de Leybourne (living 1330-1), wife of Geoffrey de Lucy (died
1305), which Desiderée has been under recent discussion in the
newsgroup.

Best always, Douglas Richardson, Salt Lake City, Utah

Thanks for this - I will see if I can come up with anything
confirmatory. If that were the case, I would have a fourth descent
from Rohese de Lucy.

John & Ellen had a son, Richard, who died without issue, and a daughter
Anne, who married Bartholomew Burgoyne - as they were ancestors of
Christopher Burgoyne, this might put William Leete back into the
picture regardless of the Hasilden problem.

Cheers

The arms of Ellen Freville nee Lucy are indeed the same as the those
borne by the Lucies of Dallington etc (e.g. "Monsire Lucy, seigneur de
Dalington: goules, a trois luces d'or crusele" from A Glossary of Terms
used in Heraldry, by James Parker - online, and said to be from a Roll
of the time of Edward III).

I think Burke's also records these arms of "Lucy of Kent", while the
arms of Lucy of Charlecote are also similar (their pikes being silver,
I think, instead of gold).

I now note that these are the arms of the Holbrook family, whose
represenation was borne by Anne Wolverston, wife of the elder William
Freville (her mother was a FitzRalph heiress whose mother was a
Holbrook heiress).

It is interesting this these arms present another exception to the old
"rule" in heralrdy of never placing a metal upon another metal (silver
crosses on a gold field).

Some further bits and pieces from Franks, "The Genealogical History of
the Freville Family":

The first of the line of the Cambridge Frevilles is Sir Richard
freville, of Scarning, Norfolk, father of Baldwin who married Lucia de
Scalariis, according to the Freville pedigree (College of Arms MS C41
fol 15, signed by Nicholas Freville, 1666)

......

Sir John Freville and his wife has a summons to the Coronation in 1308.
His arms were: "de goules, iii cresauns de ermyne" (Roll, Ed I)

His tomb in the chancel at Little Shelford bore the inscription:

ICI GIST SIRE IOHAN DE FRIVILE
KE FUST SEIGNIOUR DE CESTE VILLE
VOS KE PAR ICI PASSET
PAR CHARITE PUR LUI PRIET

[Here lies Sir John de Freville, qho was Lord of this town; you who
pass by, of charity pray for him - MAR]

...........................

His grandson, Sir John, married to Elena Lucy, received constant
military summons temps Edward III; in 1345 went with his brother Robert
into Brittany, and also served in Gascony.

Across his memorial window at Little Shelford:

Orate p a..us Johis Freville et Elene ux' eius et Walter Knych rect'
ecclie

(Pray for the souls of John Freville and Elena his wife, and Walter
Knight, rector of this church - MAR)

Their son Richard died without issue and was buried at Little Shelford:

"Hic iacet dns Ricus frevile miles, dns istius ville de pva Shelford
qui obiit 11 die Septembris anno dni MCCCLXXV"

(Here lies Richard Freville, knight, lord of this town of Little
Shelford, who died the 11th day of September in the year of our Lord
1375)

.....................

Thomas Freville [son of Robert, brother of Sir John] died in 1405, and
Margaret his wife in 1410. Her arms were:

"argent, a chevron between three martlets sable"

[According to Vol. 2 of the "Dictionary of British Arms: Mediaeval
Ordinary" by Woodcock, Grant & Graham, these arms are recorded
variously in connection with the Argum, Ashthorpe, Bentley, Comberton,
Corbett, Cryon, Eriom, Madeson, Thomas and Trionlie families]

.........................

Their son William's MI read:

"In gra et mia dei hic iacet Willmus frevile armig' quondam dns istius
ville qui obiit xix die mensis junii anno dni mcccclx et Anna et
Margareta uxores eiusdem Willmi que Anna obiit - die mensis februari
anno dni mcccc- que Margareta obiit - die mensis - anno dni mcccc-
quoru animaus propicietur deus Amen"

[In God's grace and mercy here lie William Freville, armiger, sometime
Lord of this town, who died the 19th day of June 1460, and Anne and
Margaret, wives of the said Willliam, which Anne died the - day of
February 14-- (and) which Margaret died the - day of - 14--, on whose
souls may God have mercy, Amen - MAR]

..............

Franks also notes that Robert and Rose Freville's daughter Mary married
William Walpole, according to Rose's will.

I have posted his details regarding Rose on a separate thread.

NB when Franks reports:

he must be mistaken about the date, as Sir John's IPM of 10 October
1372 states his son Richard "died three years ago", his heir to Little
Shelford therefore being "Robert Freville his brother".

Also, when John transferred his lands at West Wratting, Carlton and
Balsham to his son Richard in 41 Edward III (1367), he "retain[ed] the
manor of Little Shelford", - i.e. I have nowhere else seen Richard
referred to as Lord of Little Shelford (or as a knight).

Thanks, Michael; I'm sure that's right - in fact, Corbett was also
listed where you would expect it, with the only difference being the
change in category to "argent, a chevron 3 <martlets>". This is
necessarily so, because Norry & Ulster et al's work is descriptive
rather than prescriptive, i.e. they are reporting someone else's
[?mis-]description.

The error is therefore double-edged in nature: one may suspect that
Corbetts did not bear martlets in their arms, but one cannot know
whether the martlets in the unknown arms are not also misdescribed
crows...

I may ask him and Miss Grant to do some further digging on this one.

Cheers, MAR

Two freville corrections to add to the record:

(1) According to Alumni Cantabrigiensis, William Freville was of
Peterhouse, 1438/9; he is equated with the one of that name buried at
Little Shelford in 1461. We know this was William Freville the elder,
MP, husband of Anne Wolverston. As he was born circa 1398 (according
to his mother's IPM) it seems that the Cambridge student must have been
his son, William Freville the younger, husband of Joan Charlton. This
latter was probably therefore born circa 1420-1422.

(2) Sir Wollaston Franks, in his pioneering article, states that Robert
and Rose freville's daughter Mary married William Walpole, quoting
Rose's will as the authority. While that will does show one of his
daughters married William Walpole, it does not state which; it names
Margaret, Mary and Elizabeth without assigning husbands, but as Mary
and Elizabeth appear to be the youngest and the will details provision
for their care and future inheritance of the bequests, it would seem
that it was Margeret who married William Walpole.
