Complete Peerage, 6 (1926): 125-126 (sub Grey) has a good account of
the history of Sir John de Grey, Knt., 3rd Lord Grey of Codnor.
Regarding his first marriage, the following information is provided:
"He married, 1stly, before 4 Sept. 1325, Eleanor."
The source cited for the above record is a pardon dated 4 September
1325 granted to "John, s. of Richard de Grey of Codnor, and Eleanor his
wife for acquiring in fee tail from the said Richard the manors of Hoo
and Aylesford, Kent, and entering without license." [Reference: Cal.
Patent Rolls].
Recent research indicates that "Helen," wife of Sir John Grey, was
still living 12 July 1326, as indicated by the following record:
"July 12 [1326]. Institution of Roger Ursel priest to High Halstow
[Kent] R.; patrons, John de Grey, son of Richard de Grey, Knt., and
Helen his wife. Mandate of induction to the official of the archdeacon
of Rochester. Oath of obedience. Halling chapel. iiij. Id. July."

Hethe (Kent Arch. Soc. Records Branch, 4(1) (1916): 169].
Sir John de Grey of Codnor presented to the church of High Halstow,
Kent alone in 1347 and 1350 [Reference: Charles Johnson, ed., Diocesis
Roffensis: Registrum Hamonis Hethe (Kent Arch. Soc. Records Branch,
4(2) (1916): 837; 4(3) (1946): 902].
In 1349-50 Nicholas de Poyntz, knight, granted the right of alternate
presentation to the churches of St. Mary at Hoo and St. Margaret at
[High] Halstow, with land in Hoo, Kent to John de Grey of Codnor
[Reference: PRO Document, C 143/292/2 (abstract of document available
online at http://www.catalogue.nationalarchives.gov.uk/search.asp)].
Sir John de Grey died in 1392.
I understand from the newsgroup archives that Eleanor/Helen, 1st wife
of Sir John de Grey of Codnor, is identified in Seversmith, Colonial
Families of Long Island, New York and Connecticut, 5 (1958): 2396, as a
daugher of Hugh de Courtenay, Earl of Devon (died 1340), by his wife,
Agnes de Saint John. I haven't seen the documentation to prove this
parentage for Eleanor/Helen. If anyone has particulars, I'd appreciate
it if they would post them here on the newsgroup.

Dear Douglas
Actually, according to Burke's Peerage, Eleanor the daughter of Hugh,
Earl of Devon by Agnes St John, is said to have been the first wife of
Henry Grey of Codnor (d 1308) and thus the purported grandmother
(rather than first wife) of John Grey son of Richard Grey (d 1334/5)
(sub Devon & Grey).

I certainly agree that the chronology per Burke's, which has Eleanor's
husband dying in 1308 and her father in 1340, is questionable -
particuarly as it states that her parents were married in 1292.
However, it does refer to this father-daughter relationship as
"putative". I have not had the opportunity to check any other
reputable references sources, let alone any primary material.
