Dear List,

In the Visitations of Suffolk, an impressive pedigree is given for the
Hovell (alias Smith) family of Ashfield or Haughley. Among other
things, an Edward I descent is claimed via Gawdy and Bassigbourne, and
as Douglas Richardson mentioned in an earlier post in 2009, there is a
marriage asserted between a daughter of Sir Arthur Hopton of Cockfield
Hall (b abt 1488, of Westwood). From this link there is a descent from
Davy Tudor, bastard of Owen (father of Henry VII), and other
interesting medieval families. A link is also made to the Thorpe
family of Ashwell, Norfolk, via a daughter Beatrix of Sir John Thorpe,
third baron.

Trouble is, there are huge problems with this pedigree, especially in
chronology. The Gawdy link is certainly impossible as presented, but
whether it is an echo of a true link or s simple faleshood, I don't
know.

Does anyone know of a reliable Hovell pedigree? In my diggings around
the web, I have seen many sources repeat the Visitation, some
critically, most not.

I would point out that one interest is that this family (as well as
Woodgates, Chapman alias Barker and Vesey, all of Suffolk) are
ancestral to the 17th century immigrant Daniel Goodwin, of Kittery,
Maine.

Dave,

An article by W.W. Fiske (TAG 80(2005):104) explains that this is another case of "the name's the same." Fiske identifies the source for the assertion that Daniel was the son of Daniel & Dorothy (Barker) Goodwin but notes that no evidence is provided for the assertion. The English origins of Daniel Goodwin of Kittery, Maine remain unproven AFAIK, unless something more recent has come to light.
