Complete Peerage 2 (1912): 12 (sub Basset) includes an account of Ralph Basset, of Weldon, Knt., who was murdered 6 June 1385, by three villagers of Cottingham in Rockingham Forest. The following information is provided regarding his marriage:

"He married Alianore. He died 6 June 1385. Admon. 19 June 1385, to his widow. She married, before Michaelmas 1390, John Clisseby. Both were living at Michaelmas 1392." END OF QUOTE

Here are the references provided to support these statements: Nothing.

Research indicates that Ralph Basset and his wife, Eleanor, were married before 12 April 1383 (date of fine), as indicated by the fine below:

Parties: Ralph Basset of Weldon' and Eleanor, his wife, querents, and William Pakyngton', clerk, and William Danby, deforciants.
Property: The manors of Pytesleye and Assheleye in the county of Northampton and the manor of Drayton' Beuchamp' in the county of Buckingham and the manor of Wyuelesthorn' in the county of Hertford.
Action: Plea of covenant.
Agreement: Ralph has acknowledged the manors to be the right of William Danby, as those which the same William and William Pakyngton' have of his gift.
For this: William and William have granted to Ralph and Eleanor the manors and have rendered them to them in the court, to hold to Ralph and Eleanor and the heirs of their bodies, of the chief lords for ever. In default of such heirs, remainder to the right heirs of Ralph.

Eleanor, widow of Ralph Basset, married (2nd) before 17 Dec. 1385 JOHN CLISBY (or CLYSBY, CLISSEBY, CLYSSEBY), Esq. Reference: Northamptonshire Past & Present 3 (1965): 291–296, which can be viewed at the following weblink:

John and Eleanor his wife were engaged in lawsuits in 1390 and 1391. In 1393 they were charged with waste of the lands of her former husband, Ralph Basset.

Eleanor died shortly before 2 January 1394 [Reference: Cal. of Close Rolls, 1392–1396 (1925): 244].

John Clisby, Esq., died before 16 July 1403 [Reference: Cal. of Close Rolls, 1402–1405 (1929): 188].

For interest's sake, below is my current file account concerning Ralph Basset [died 1385] of Great Weldon, Northamptonshire.

I. RALPH BASSET, of Great Weldon, Ashley, Pytchley, and Weston by Welland, Northamptonshire, Drayton Beauchamp, Buckinghamshire, Wilstone (in Tring), Hertfordshire, Madeley Ulfac (in Checkley), Staffordshire, etc., son and heir, born about 1347 (aged 21 in 1368). On 6 Dec. 1368 the king took his homage and fealty, and he had livery of his father’s lands in cos. Northampton, Leicester, Buckingham, Hertfordshire, and Stafford. In 1377 he was attached to respond to William Dextere, of Halughton [Hallaton], Leicestershire, and William his son regarding a trespass [vi et armis] at Halughton [Hallaton] and Welham, Leicestershire. He married before 12 April 1383 (date of fine) ELEANOR _____. They had one son, Richard. In 1381 he sued Albinus Bryd in the Court of Common Pleas regarding a reasonable account of the time he was his receiver of money. In 1383 William Pakyngton, clerk, and William Danby, granted Ralph and Eleanor his wife and their heirs the manors of Pytchley and Ashley, Northamptonshire, Drayton Beauchamp, Buckinghamshire, and Wilstone (in Tring), Hertfordshire. In Easter term 1384 Henry, vicar of the church of Cold Ashby, Northamptonshire, and John Wryte, vicar of the church of Rothersthorpe, Northamptonshire, executors of the will of Simon Warde, sued Ralph Basset, of Great Weldon, Northamptonshire, and Ralph son and heir of Ralph Basset, of Weldon, Northamptonshire, in the Court of Common Pleas regarding a debt of 12 marks. RALPH BASSET was murdered 6 June 1385, by three villagers of Cottingham in Rockingham Forest. Administration was granted to his widow, Eleanor, 19 June 1385. Eleanor married (2nd) before 17 Dec. 1385 JOHN CLISBY (or CLYSBY, CLISSEBY, CLYSSEBY), Esq. In Michaelmas term 1390 and Hilary term 1391 Thomas Basset, clerk, sued Richard Basset and John Clisby (or Clisseby) and Eleanor his wife in the Court of Common Pleas regarding the manors of Weldon and Weston, Northamptonshire, which properties he claimed as the son and heir of Ralph Basset [died 1341]. In 1391 John de Gresley, Knt., sued John Clysby and Eleanor his wife, executrix of the will of Ralph Basset of Weldon, Knt., in the Court of Common Pleas regarding a debt of 20 marks. The same year John de Aylesbury, Knt., and John Knyvet sued Richard Basset and John Clisseby and Eleanor his wife in the Court of Common Pleas regarding the manors of Weldon and Weston, Northamptonshire, and advowson of the Priory of Launde, Leicestershire. On 20 October 1391 Sir John Aylesbury and his son, Sir Thomas, were each bound under pain of 1,000 marks not to molest John Clysseby. On 27 Jan. 1393 the king granted Edward, Earl of Rutland, all moneys pertaining to the king by reason of waste made by John Clisseby and Eleanor his wife, in lands which they held for her life in counties Northamptonshire and Rutland by the death of Ralph Basset, her former husband. On 22 June 1393 the king ordered the escheator in Northamptonshire and Rutland to enquire touching waste in the two-thirds of the lands and tenements of the heir of Ralph Basset of Weldon, knight, tenant in chief, which John de Clisseby and Eleanor his wife, then held at farm by the king’s grant, the heir being a minor. His wife, Eleanor, died shortly before 2 January 1394. JOHN CLISBY, Esq., died before 16 July 1403.

Thank you for your post. Much appreciated.
The published 1385 inquisition post mortem of Ralph Basset confirms that his wife Eleanor was the mother of their son, Richard, then aged 8. Hence Ralph and Eleanor would have married before 1377 as you say.
