Dear Newsgroup ~

Complete Peerage 10 (1945) 121-123 (sub Ormond) has a good account of
the life of James Butler (died 1405), 3rd Earl of Ormond. The editor
reports that he married "before 17 June 1386 Anne, daughter of John
(de Welles), Lord Welles, by Maud, daughter of William (de Ros), Lord
Ros. She was living in 1396."

The helpful online A2A Catalogue
(http://www.a2a.org.uk/search/index.asp) contains an abstract of a
lease dated 26 June 1397, issued by Anne, Countess of Ormond. I've
copied this item below. This record indicates that Countess Anne was
living as late as 26 June 1397.

Worcestershire Record Office: Hampton (Pakington) of Westwood Park,
Droitwich, Worcestershire, Catalogue Ref. 705:349/12946/492083 -
Dated Tuesday next after the Feast of the Nativity of St. John the
Baptist, 21 Ric. II 26 June, 1397:

Lease for eight years from Anne, Countess of Ormond, William atte
Hille and William atte Lee to Sir John Drayton, knt., of the Manor of
Aylesbury [co. Buckingham] and rents and appurtenances in the towns of
Aylesbury and Burton [Bierton, co. Buckingham]. END OF CATALOGUE
ITEM.

In a related vein, Collectanea Top. et Gen. 1 (1834): 280–281 contains
abstracts from a breviary [MS. Reg 2 B. xv.e] executed in the reign of
King Edward IV for the Butler family, Earls of Ormond, whose arms
appear on folio 14b. This ancient family record gives the following
death record for Anne Welles, Countess of Ormond:

Obitus Anne Comitisse Ormond', que obijt xiij'o die Novembris.

This record indicates that Anne, Countess of Ormond, died 13 November
[year not stated].

Elsewhere I see that my notes state Countess Anne died before 3 Dec.
1399. I believe this date is derived from the following source:

T.B. Butler, Gen. of the Butlers of Ireland 6 (c.1962): 20–24; 9
(1962): 1, 31–46.

The above records tell us that Countess Anne was living 26 June 1397,
and that she died 13 Nov. [year uncertain, but before 3 Dec. 1399].

For interest sake, I've listed below the names of the various colonial
immigrants who descend from Anne Welles, wife of James Butler, 3rd
Earl of Ormond:

2. Elizabeth Alsop.

3. Grace Chetwode.

4. Anne Humphrey.

5. Thomas Lunsford.

6. Anne Mauleverer.
