I have:

++++

WILLIAM CAREW, of Moulsford, Berks., He was a minor at his father's death
& his wardship was granted to Bertram de Criol on 11 July 1228, but on 27
Dec. 1230 his wardship was purchased by John le Marshall, however it was
later restored to Bertram de Criol, 21 Nov. 1234. M Alice (Died before 24
March 1271 as "a widow"), d. of John le Marshall (nephew of William
Marshall, 1st Earl of Pembroke), & his wife Aline de Rye (See MARSHALL).
Died before 24 March 1271. He had issue: VCH Berks Round, p 27 MS

++++

Can anyone tell me the name of the brother of William Marshall who married
Aline de Rye and was father of Alice (wife of William Carew). With
references please.

Thanks

From "William Marshal" by David Crouce, p 81, it was William I's (-1219)
nephew John, the bastard son of William's brother John (II) whom the king
awarded the heiress of the Ryse family, perhaps the Aline Rye you mention?
Crouch proves that Meyer, Painter and Duby were wrong to conclude that this
John was not the son of John (II), he also argues that John the son's
mother was an Alice de Colleville. This Alice may have been Alice of
Frostenden, Suffolk widow of Robert de Colleville, or more likely, the wife
of a Sussex land-owner William de Colleville.

Was the father of the above William Carew Nicholas Carew (died 1228)? If
yes, who was his mother? If no, who was his father? Is this the same
William Carew who's son Nicholas married Alice Tute?

Thank you.

Benjamin

I see noone else has had a go at this one, so from info provided by the Head
Keeper at Antony (a Carew residence) in Cornwall England, I can say:

> Was the father of the above William Carew Nicholas Carew (died 1228)?

Yes.
