Burke's Peerage 1999 page 2120

Henry Percy, Earl of Northumberland married Lady Eleanor Nevill and they had quite a few children, but my question is about Ralph the seventh son.

Sir Ralph Percy born about 1425 killed in battle 25 April 1464. According to Burke's Peerage he was "said to be unmarried" but a branch claims descent from him.

Gerald Paget gives this Ralph two children, one specifically by Eleanor Acton daughter of Lawrence Acton. Both children appear as ancestors of Prince Charles, Sir Henry Percy as P 49835 and Margaret as Q118502 wife of Sir Ralph Harbottle.

Ralph's son Sir Henry Percy was apparently owner of Bamburgh Castle and married a Constance who as his widow married Sir William Eure.

Can anyone add to this?

With many thanks.

Leo,

Even though we have discussed this family group away from this site I
thought I would go ahead and post this information in hope of eliciting comments,
additions, corrections &c.

Todd

A tentative line that I am working on:

1. Henry Percy, 2nd Earl of Northumberland, b. 3 Feb. 1392/3, d. 22 May
1455, m. Eleanor Neville (d/o Ralph Neville, 1st Earl of Westmorland, by his
second wife Joan Beaufort).

2. Ralph Percy, Knt., Constable of Bamburgh Castle & Dunstanburgh Castle.
Surrendered Dunstanburgh Castle to the Yorkists in 1462 after siege & swore
fealty to Edward IV. In 1463 he delivered both Bamburgh Castle and
Dunstanburgh Castle to the Lancastrians, and was slain by the Yorkists on 25 Apr. 1464
at the battle of Hedgley Moor. He is said to have had a daughter Margaret he
was wife to Ralph Harbottle, Knt. In his 27 Jul. 1485 will Henry Percy, 4th
Earl of Northumberland, made a legatee of "my cousin Ralph Harbotell Knt."
Ralph Percy's base-born son was:

3. Henry Percy, Knt., of Bamburgh Castle. In his 27 Jul. 1485 will Henry
Percy, 4th Earl of Northumberland, made provision for "my Cousin Sr Henry
Percys children for their Marriages." Constance, widow of Sir Henry Percy,
re-married by 1492 to Sir William Eure [with dispensation dated 3 Jul. 1497]. A
daughter of Henry and Constance:

4. Margery Percy
In Flower's 1563/64 Yorkshire Visitation she is described as "Margery doter
to Sir Henry Percy of Bamborow, basse son." She married Sir Henry
Widdrington [son of Sir Rauffe Widdrington & Felicia Claxton] probably ca. 4 Jan. 1492
when a settlement was made between Sir Rauffe Widdrington and Sir William
Eure & his wife Constance. "Rauff Wedrington Knt." was also a legatee in the 27
Jul. 1485 will of the 4th Earl of Northumberland. Robert, Lord Ogle, made a
grant of premises in Northumberland on 29 Jan. 1526/7 mentioning "Sir Wm
Ellercar, kt., and wife Dame Marjory, widow of Sir Hen Woddryngton, kt."
Margery's daughter by Ellerker:

5. Anne Ellerker
John Shafto of Bavington registered his pedigree in Harvey's Visitation of
1552 and listed his wife as "Anne, dowghter to Sir William Elerkar of
Wythryngton, and by her had yssu..." This was repeated in Flower's 1563-64 Yorkshire
Visitation. In the 6 Sep. 1565 will of Sir Robert Ellerker she is described
as "Wedowe Shafto of Bavington." John Shafto was the eldest son of Cuthbert
Shafto of Bavington by his first wife, Isabell Bertram, co-heiress of
Brenkley. John Shafto and Anne Ellerker had four sons [John, Edward who left male
issue, Luke, & William who had a daughter Margerie] and four daughters [Jane,
Mary, Dorothy, & Grace]. The eldest daughter:

6. Jane Shafto
Due to land tenure, onomastics, and chronology, I believe she might be the
wife of John Fenwick, Gent., of Brenkley, who occurred in 1571 & 1573
apparently holding the Shafto third of Brenkley without purchasing it, and who
purchased the Cowdale third of the same estate in 1573 with guaranteed warranty
against the Cowdale and Swynburne heirs [but not mentioning the Shafto heirs as
I believe he already represented their interest at that time]. John Fenwick
was deceased by 1590, but his widow lived on being buried in 1613. Due to
the fading of the church register at Ponteland her given name is unreadable.

7. John Fenwick, Gent., of Brenkley
He married Jennet Pye in 1612 and was alive as late as 1629 when he served
as a grand juror in the Northumberland Quarter Sessions. He is throughout his
life called "....., Gent., of Brenkley." Two of his children:

8. a. Cuthbert Fenwick, Gent. (1614-1655)
b. Jane (Fenwick) Smyth-Taylor-Eltonhead (1618-1659)

Sir Ralph Percy, Governor of Bamburgh and Dunstanburgh Castles,
Northumberland.
born at Leconfield, East Yorkshire on the day of St. Tiburcius (Aug. 11),
1425
slain on the Feast of St. Mark (Apr. 25), 1464 at Hedgley Moor
Sources: Collins's Peerage of England (1812) 2:282 (fully annotated) &
D.N.B. 15, 873.

married Eleanor, only daughter and heiress of Laurence Acton, Esq., Mayor of
Newcastle 1432, 1433, & 1437, M.P. 1431, 1432, & 1437, Master Forester to
the Earl of Northumberland.
Sources: Collins's Peerage of England (1812) 2: 283 & W. Percy Hedley's
Northumberland Families (1968) 1: 30-34 (sub Acton of Acton).

Children of Sir Ralph Percy:

1. Sir Henry Percy, Knt., of Bamburgh Castle, Northumberland.
Died 1486 (Collins 2:286). In 1472 styled "Henricus Percy Miles" and
"Consanguineus Domini" (Collins 2:285). Styled "consanguineum domini" in Percy
Bailiff's Rolls of the Fifteenth Century (1921) (Surtees Society 134), p. 61.
Had two children (as per Collins 2:286-287): John Percy (alive 1520), Esq.,
of Newton (near Bamburgh), and Margery (Percy) Widdrington-Ellerker.

2. Sir Ralph Percy, Knt.
Had an annuity of 20 marks yearly for life (Collins 2:284)

3. George Percy, Esq., of Newton (near Bamburgh), Northumberland.
Died ca. 1500 (Collins 2:284). Married in 6 Hen. VII to Eleanor (daughter
of Sir William Hylton) and relict of Owen, 2nd Lord Ogle, and mother to Ralph,
3rd Lord Ogle (Collins 2:284).

4. Margaret Percy
Married Sir Ralph Harbottle, who held the Acton inheritance apparently
received as dower (Collins 2:285)

Sir Egerton Brydges in Collins's Peerage of England (1812) spends several
pages detailing the descendants of Sir Ralph Percy including the Widdrington and
Ellerker lines, even going so far as to need an apology in his eyes
[2:290-291]:
"The reader will pardon this long digression relating to a branch of this
noble family, which has hitherto been omitted in all former Pedigrees and
Genealogical Histories; and yet, the several individuals of it occurring in public
Records and General History, and being there mistaken for their relations of
the elder line, have occasioned a confusion, which it was thought deserving
this very minute inquiry to remove. We now return to the other issue of the
second Earl of Northumberland."

Dear Todd,

Many thanks for all this. Child nr. 3 George Percy, according to CP Volume X page 32, was knighted by June 1489 and was one of the esquires for the king's body.

Many thanks
Leo
