"In his history of County Down, the late Dr. Alex-
ander Knox, of Strangford, remarks that the earliest occurrence
of the name of Knox in Ireland, which he had seen was the sig-
nature of Thomas, appended to an inquisition held at Antrim on
the 12th July, 1605. Probably this early settler was the father
of three brothers (traditionally of the Renfrewshire family of
Eanfurly) who, about 1620, settled as tenant-farmers on the
lands of Ballynennox, near Coleraine, in the County of London-
derry.
"Thomas Knox was all his life firmly attached to
the Protestant interest, and so distinguished himself in the reign
of King James TIL ; also in the reign of Queen Anne. King
George I. named him one of the, lords of his most honorable
Privy Council. Though Mr. Knox had left Scotland and settled
in Ireland, he took care that a record, or authentic voucher,
should remain in Scotland of his descent from the ancient family
of Eanfurly, and of which in his own time he came to be the
representative, for he applied to the Lord Lyon, Sir Charles
Erskine of Cambo, to get his coat of arms matriculate, which
was done accordinglv, and is recorded in the Lvon office, viz. :
'Thomas Knox, Esq., in the kingdom of Ireland, lawful son to
Thomas Knox, descended of the family of Eanfurlie, in the king-
dom of Scotland; Gules, a falcon volant, or within an orb wavy
on the outer side and ingrailed on the inner side, argent. Crest,
A falcon close perching proper. Motto, Moveo et Proficior.' "

This is all very curious as I've run into the same claims for my ancestor James Knox (b. 1713, Glasgow, Scotland d. 1787, Chester Co., SC). In his case the proposed lineage, from the Silvieland family is a follows:
-William Knox m. Margaret Fleming
--William Knox m. Margaret Maxwell
---Marcus Knox m. Margaret Greenlees
----William Knox m. N. Campbell
-----William Knox m. Elizabeth Crofton
------John Knox m. Agnes Johnstone
-------James Knox (1713-1787) m. Elizabeth Craig
I've also found secondary sources claiming that my Knox family was related to John Knox (the Reformer), Henry Knox (Washington's Sec. of War), and James K. Polk. Frankly, I concluded long ago that there was little proof of any of these relationships and that in all likelihood this was just another example of the old "the name's the same so they must be related" school of genealogy and never took it very seriously. I'd be very curious to know what kinds of sources you've found.
Cheers,
Jeff Duvall

I pointed at a problematic section of that. You didn't answer.
What sources.
