Dear Listers,
I wonder if anyone would be kind enough to check my rendition of the
abbreviated Court Latin of this text into English? Please note that
while the document itself is post-mediaeval, it refers to events which
fall within the scope of this list.
In my English rendering, have capitalised three Latin abbreviations
[PUT x 2, and APPET] with which I had difficulty. I would appreciate
any clarification or pointers.
Thank you,
Richard

(67) The same place, 21 Mar. 1631[-1632]
Thomas Weldon of Raffin and John Weston of Ballybaghell were seised in
fee to the use of Richard Weldon of Raffin and his heirs of the town
and lands of Raffin containing 1 fortified mansion, 6 messuages, and
180 acres of land; in Butterston, Nobber, and Littelrathe 4 messuages
and 60 acres; in Rathbrann and Rathsallagh 2 messuages and 10 acres;
Beggston 3 messuages and 40 acres; Knock alias Knogh and Lishyanston 2
messuages and 20 acres; Tullaghard 3 messuages and 60 acres; and in
Trym 1 messuage.
So seised, the same Thomas Weldon and John Weston both possessed/gave
seisin/sub-infeudated Richard Veldon by deed indented dated the 21st
of September in the ninth regnal year of the reign of the former Queen
[i.e. 21 September 1567], and granted the premises in Raffin &
Tullaghard to Richard Halfpenny of Harryeston & John Crossan of
Kenraghton & their heirs, to the uses aforesaid and endorsed,
according to the tenor of the original [deed]. This same Richard
Veldon died 50 years ago [i.e. circa 1581-82]. William Veldon was his
son & heir. This William Veldon, by his own deed dated the 1st of
December in the 28th regnal year of the said former Queen [i.e. 1
December 1585], granted the said premises to Nicholas Veldon, Peter
Veldon & Henry Veldon son[s] of James Veldon formerly of the city of
Dublin merchant, and to Richard Veldon of Dromenston in the county of
Meath, and to their heirs and assigns, to the intended uses specified
in the said deed, equally following the tenor of the original deed.
The aforesaid John Crossan died 30 years ago [i.e. circa 1601-2].
William Veldon also died. James Veldon was his brother and heir. The
aforesaid Richard Halfpenny, by his own deed dated the 10th of June
1600, granted the said premises to the aforesaid James Veldon & his
heirs, PUT by the said deed APPET, which deed followed the tenor of
the original; by virtue of this, the aforesaid James was seised of the
said premises, PUT law postulates [states]. The aforesaid James
[Veldon], by his own deed dated the 11th of July 1601, he granted the
premises to Nicholas Boyle, vicar of Killpatrick, James Toole of
Rocheston, & Thomas & James Newtervile of Castleton & their heirs, to
the intended uses specified in the said deed, in conformity with the
original. This same James Veldon died on the 30th of May 1618. The
aforesaid Thomas Veldon is his son & heir, and was of the age of 25
years and more at the time of the death of his father, & married
[i.e., a husband, and b. ca 1592/93]. The premises in Knock,
Lishianton & Tullaghard are held of the King, by military service; the
premises in Raffin are held of Viscount Gormonston, according the
custom of his manor of Nobber, for a sixth part of a knight's fee; the
premises in Butlerston, Nobber & Littlerath are held of the said
Viscount, as of his manor aforesaid, by sect' cur' [i.e. as enrolled
in a section [sect'] of the manor court [cur'] rolls?]; the premises
in Rathbran & Rathsallagh are held of Lord Slane, as of his manor of
Slane, by an annuity paid; the premises in Beggston are held of [blank
in the original] Fleming, as of his manor of Seddan, by fealty & sect'
cur' [see prior interpretation]; & the premises in Trym are held of
the King, by the payment of 1d [i.e. a denarius, or, in English, one
penny].
Research Note: The Castleto[w]n Newtervile (more commonly Netterville)
connexion (to Thomas and James) above may indicate that James Veldon
used them as feoffees for his son and heir, Thomas Veldon, because
they were in-laws to Thomas Veldon, his heir, whom the foregoing
record states was married by the time James Veldon, his father, the
document's nominal arrangement maker, had died. This stems from the
claim made in John Lodge's 1789 work, "The Peerage of Ireland", vol.
4, p. 204, re 'Netterville, Viscount Netterville', that John
Netterville's 6th and youngest daughter (he also had two sons, James
and Richard), who is unnamed, married "---- Weldon, of Raffin, Esq.".
If true, this marriage statement gives us greater understanding of the
foregoing document while the document itself sheds light on the
statement in the Netterville pedigree in the Peerage account, by
giving it greater substance. RHBC-Z note, 1 May 2014.
