According to the Victoria County History for Lancashire vol. 3:435-39
(see quote below), Elizabeth Pilkington m. William Atherton, lord of
Atherton in 1400. Her father was a Sir John Pilkington, knt, but . . .
any idea which Sir John?
Chronologically, it could be the Sir John who died 16 Feb 1420/1421 and
who married Margaret Verdon but there could, of course, be another Sir
John out there . . . Anyone have any ideas?
"Sir William Atherton, knt., (fn. 27) aged thirty years at his father's
death, married first Elizabeth daughter of Sir John Pilkington, knt.,
by whom he had issue. . . ."
Many thanks,
Roger

I have in an old notebook a copy of a pedigree: _Pedigree of the
Pilkingtons of Lancashire and the Chief Branches, from 1066 to 1600_,
"Prepared to illustrate the Genealogical Paper read before the
Historical Society og Lancashire and Cheshire". This shows among the
children of Sir John de Pilkington and Margaret Vernon, a daughter:
Elizabeth, mar. Sir Wm Hatherley
The subsequent generation shows for Sir John and Elizabeth de Trafford:
Elizabeth mar. her cousin, Sir William Harrington
Given this, I suspect that for "Hatherley", read "Atherton".

FWIW, this appears to come from Dugdale's 1664-5 Visitation of
Lancashire, where the Atherton pedigree reports that Sr Will: Atherton,
kt.=Eliz: dau. to Sr John Pilkington, kt., 1 H. 4, first wife.

Thank you for the information and perhaps you're correct that
"Hatherley" should have been "Atherton." Following extensive research
(a quick google search for "elizabeth pilkington" and "william
hatherley" - both with and without the "de"), I found absolutely
nothing. . . .
Best wishes,
Roger
Well on p. 624 in Vol 3, "The Wallop Family" says that Elizabeth m. Wm
Atherton in 1399 and that her parents were Sir John de Pilk. and
Margaret de Verdon, but no ancestors of these are shown. The details
given are:
Sir John de Pilkington, of Pilkington, Lancashire; had free warren in
his manors of Pilkington, etc.; fought at Agincourt, 25 October 1415,
with a retinue of 3 esquires, 10 lancers and 45 archers; was a witness
at the Scrope v. Grosvenor trial; b. circa 1365; d. 8 March 1421.
Margaret (widow of Hugh Bradshaw), da. of Sir John de Verdon, by his
wife, Maud; d. 28 April 1437.
As ever Vernon James Watney gives no references whatsoever for any of
his information. The printing is nice, though.

For what it's worth, Pilkington's "History of the Pilkington Family of Lancashire" (Liverpool: J. Pilkington, 1912.), p. 47 identifies Elizabeth as the daughter of John & Margaret (de Verdun) Pilkington.
