Dear Newsgroup:

Complete Peerage, 11 (1949): 474-475 (sub Say) has a good account of
the life and career of Geoffrey de Say, Knt., 1st Lord Say. The
editor shows that Sir Geoffrey de Say married "Idonia" (i.e., Idoine),
da. of William (de Leyburn), Lord Leyburn." Idoine survived her
husband's death in 1332, and was subsequently assigned dower 15 Apr.
1322.

Recently I located a record of Lady Idoine de Say in an episcopal
register, which record shows Lady Idoine was still living as late as
14 November 1337. A verbatim transcript of the episcopal register
item is provided below:

Cantaria beate Marie virginis in ecclesia de Mallyng'.

Nov. 14 [1337]. Institution of Sir John de Lageham of Mallyng',
priest, to chantry of B.V.M. in Mallyng' parish church, vacant by
death of Adam Herberd. Patron, Dame Ydonea, widow of Sir Geoffrey de
Say, kt. Institution made 'absque omni prejudicio dicte ecclesie de
Mallyng' et ipsius vicarti'. Oath of obedience. Trottescliffe.
xviij Kal. Dec. 1337. [Reference: Charles Johnson, Registrum Hamonis
Hethe, Diocesis Roffensis, A.D. 1319-1352, 1 (Canterbury and York
Soc., vol. 48) (1948): 578].

Dear Newsgroup ~

Since my first post on Idoine de Say earlier today, I've learned that
Lady de Say is also mentioned by name in the Kent Lay Subsidy of
1332/2. A modern transcript of the subsidy can be found in the book,
Documents Illustrative of Medieval Kentish Society, edited by F.R.H.
Du Boulay, published in 1964, as Kent Arch. Soc., vol. 18:

pg. 87 Hundred of Preston

Lady Idonya de Say 11s. 0d.

pg. 114 Hundred of Larkfield

Lady de Say 6s. 8d.

pg. 136 Hundred of Blackheath

The Court of Lady de Say £1. 0s. 0d.

For interest's sake, the following colonial immigrants descend from
Idoine de Say (née Leyburn):

1. Essex Beville.

2. Thomas Booth.

3. Obadiah Bruen.

4. Henry Corbin.

5. Frances, Jane & Katherine Deighton.

6. John Fisher.

7. Jane Haviland.

8. Edward, Edmund, Richard, & Matthew Kempe.

9. Mary Launce.

10. Anne Lovelace.

11. Thomas Lunsford.
