I'd be delighted if anyone can poke holes (or confirm) sections of the
following line. The skeleton is based on the William Forman Wyckoff,
however I've already corrected a couple of substanial errors and would
appreciate any input from any one who may be familiar with these Danish
folks.
For brevity's sake I've eliminated siblings and extra wives/mistresses and
husbands, however there are multiple lines of descent.
Thank you,
-Nicole

I've seen this descendency and feel it is contrived. The information I
have is that Claes Cornelise Van Norden likely came on the ship King David
in 1636. His son, Pieter Claesen Van Norden, arrived at Fort Orange in
1637, on the Rennsselaerwyck, which stopped at New Amsterdam, 4 March 1637.
Pieter's life in the Fort Orange region is well documented. Because of
problems he and his father-in-law had with the local powers at Fort Orange,
he returned to New Amsterdam, where his life is also fairly well
documented. In 1687, records at New Amsterdam show that he had taken the
surname Wijcoff.

Thanks for the comments. It's an interesting idea, and your suspicions, if
true, are quite a wrench in the works! However, I feel the case is pretty
strong for Claes Cornelissen van Schouwen to be the father of Pieter Claesen
(Wyckoff) of Kings County, NY. It is his earlier line which I view with
trepidation... indeed, the descent from the line of King Harold Godwinsson
so frequently reported is entirely incorrect.
Although not complete, the log of the "Rensselaers Wijk" includes both
Pieter Clasen, from Nordingen, East Friesland and Pieter Cornelisz. Pieter
was the brother Claes Cornelisz, a merchant trader on the East sea, who had
relatives already in the New World, and who resided on the island of
Schouwen as of 1629. A document dated September 14, 1631 refers to Claes,
his (deceased) wife Margaret van der Goes, and their son Pieter Claesen.
After his wife's death in August of 1631 Claes sells all of his property and
trading interests to his brother Jacob and brother-in-law Carl Carlsson
Bonde.
In the New World, a Claes Cornelissen van Schouw(en) appears by 1642, is
referred to as "meutelaer" or "meuzelaer" (merchant), and a disposition
shows the same birth year of 1597 as the Claes Cornelisz of Schouwen Island.
Although it is possible that Claes did not sail on the Rensselaers Wijk and
may have entrusted the care of his 11 year old son Pieter to his brother, it
seems almost certain that Claes was preparing to leave Sweden by divesting
all of his property.
It seems far more unlikely to me that Claes would chose to settle somewhere
besides the New World without his son, than that he might have been on the
same ship to America as his son and brother. I haven't seen any links from
Claes Cornelisz of Sweden to the Claes Cornelise van Norden you mention, but
I will keep my eyes open.
Thanks again for the input,
-Nicole
