Hello All,
The following is my reconstruction of the d'Auberville family of Kent,
based upon available sources (incl. Dugdale's Baronage), and with certain
relationships indicated based in part on chronology. In particular, the
placement of Clarice d'Auberville (d. 1250 or later), wife of Fulk
FitzWarin, is based largely on the approximate chronology of her life
(born say 1200-1210, m. say 1225-1235) as no specific evidence of her
relationship, short of the Fine Roll entry (1250) provided by Chris
Phillips (which at least provides a connection to landholdings in
Kent), has been found to date.
Comment, criticism and relevent documentation are all welcome.
Cheers,
John *

Dear Richard,
Thanks for that lookup.
Unfortunately, I don't have access to the Wagner work in question; with
luck, someone else of the list will.
As to the 'Clarice d'Auberville, 2nd wife of Fulk' scenario, this is the
long-standing interpretation (as also followed in the more recent CP, incl.
the reference you/Wagner give below), based in large part on the account in the
'Chronicle of Fulk FitzWarin'. I am convinced that this is in error, and
that Clarice d'Auberville was the first (or likely, only) wife of Fulk FitzWarin
'IV' (d. 1264), son of Fulk 'III' (d. 1249 or before) and his wife Maud le
Vavasour.
The strongest evidence in hand, which I mentioned already, is the record
given by Ms. Meisel, dated 1249:
‘ Fulk Fitz Warin acknowledges that he gave, conceded and
by his charter confirmed to Mabil, his daughter, for homage
and her service, his entire manor of Lambourn with all
appurtenances, to have and hold for herself and the heirs
of her body of Fulk and his heirs freely, quietly, etc.,
saving religious service, as is described in his charter.’
[Meisel, p. 96, citing records of King's Bench for 1249]
Fulk 'III' FitzWarin (husband of Maud le Vavasour) was born in 1178 or
before; in 1249, if he was still alive and married to Clarice d'Auberville, he
would have been somewhere between 70 and 80 years of age. At that time he
would have had a son and heir aged about 40 or more (Fulk 'IV'), and would be
granting the significant manor of Lambourn, Berks. to his young (say 16-19 year
old) daughter - and Fulk 'IV' 's half sister - Maud on her marriage to William
de Crevequer, something that Meisel found to be incredible.
It is far more believeable, and likely, that the 1249 grant was by Fulk
'IV' (aged 40 or more) to his young daughter - Maud (by HIS wife, Clarice
d'Auberville). There are a number of relevant SGM threads; I'd recommend in part,
<CP Correction: Fulk 'III' FitzWarin and His Descendants> from May 2003.
Cheers,
John
