A year or so ago I posed a question about the ancestry of the Devereux
family drawing attention to the problems posed by the treatment of the
evidence by Nichols (History and Antiquities of Leicestershire). The line
now seems secure back to Walter (16 in the ancestor list below). By
inference from a remark in CP it would seem that William (32) was his
father, though I have no explicit evidence for this and CP does not state
that Walter was William’s son and heir.

The main source used apart from CP was the *History of Parliament: The
House of Commons, 1386-1421*.

In the thread mentioned earlier someone posted a line back to Stephen
Devereux. I also looked up GENDEX and found further occurrences of this
line (i.e. from William (32) to Stephen) but no evidence for the persons
listed or the affiliations claimed. I have been unable to find the source
of this “traditional” pedigree. Once we get to Stephen the evidence abounds
(relatively speaking) for marriages and ancestors. That William (32)
descends fom Stephen and his wife Maud Giffard seems probable from the
lands involved.

Anyway, here is the ancestor list to date. If anyone has corrections and/or
addtional info on this family, it would be welcome. ['#' indicates that the

A point I should have added. Walter (8) would seem to have predeceased his
father as he did not inherit Bodenham and is described as 'of Weobley'. I
indicated that Walter (16) died after 1382 which is when he attended his
one and only parliament with his son. The former may have died as the
traditional genealogies indicate in 1409 (though the *History of
Parliament* gives no indication of his date of death). I shall try to check
this out.
