CP VIII pages 581-586.
John Mautravers became, by writ, Baron Mautravers in 1330. He has quite a
write up, taking a few pages. He died 16 February 1363/4. By his first wife
he had a son,
John Mautravers. This John died 22 January 1348/9, while his father was
still alive.
John the younger had married Gwenthlian.
On pages 585 and 586 the three children of this John the Younger and
Gwenthlian are mentioned.
Henry, grandson and heir, being son and heir of John Mautravers and
Gwentlian his wife, both abovenamed.
He died an infant in the lifetime of his grandfather, before 8 February
1349/50.
At the death of John, Lord Mautravers, in 1364, the Barony of Mautravers
fell, according to modern doctrine, into abeyance between his granddaughters
and coheirs, (1) Joan who married twice but died childless and (2) Eleanor
This Eleanor is de Jure Baroness Mautravers and married John d'Arundel.
The Complete Peerage XI pages 102 and 103
William de Ros, Lord Ros, married (licence 9 October 1394) Margaret,
daughter of Sir John d'Arundel (d.1379), by Eleanor yr daughter and coheir
of John (Mautravers) Lord Mautravers (d.1364) which Eleanor, about 1397,
became de jure, according to modern doctrine, suo jure Baroness Mautravers.
The error is, according to me, that in the Ros entry
Eleanor is identified as the daughter of her grandfather.
Volume XIV, page 553, does not correct this.
Best wishes
