These first 4 generations are taken from Stuart's ROYALTY FOR COMMONERS,
LINE 335 later in the line< I believe he has things garbled as he shows two
succcessive genertations as having the same wife !:

1.) Rogerus Magnus, who founded the abbey of St. Oppertuna in 911;
accompanied Rollo at the conquest of Normandy.

2.) Roger, prob father of gen 3 below.

3.) Rogerus Magnus

4.) Roger I de Montgomery, Vicompte d'Heimois (Exemes), 1031-1032; exiled
to Paris, 1037, where he died c. 1040.

I show a slightly different lineage:

1.) Hugh de Montgomery, parentage unknown,
m.Josselinme de Beaumont, also of unk. ancestry

2.) Roger de Montgomery; b.1022 in Normandy; d.27 July 1094 in England.
1st Earl of Arundel and Shrewsbury. His wife, MABEL, brought him the
Lordship af Alcenon in Normandy. When WILLIAM THE CONQUERER invaded
England in 1066, Roger remained in Normandy as regent. He joined WILLIAM
in England in 1067 and was created Earl of Arundel. Upon the dismemberment
of Mercia in 1070, he was also given land in the Welsh Marches and became
Earl of Shrewsbury.
m. Mabel, dau. of William II, Count of Alcenon.
They had at least 5 children:
a.) Robert de Belleme, Earl of Arundel.
b.) Arnulphde Montgomery, great grandfather of Gerald FitzNaurice,
Justiciar of Ireland.
c.) Mathilde, m. Robert, Earl of Cornwall, uterine half-brother
of William the Conquerer.
d.) Sibyl m. Robert FitzHaimond, Lord of Cruelly. Their dau.,
Mabel/Maud m. Robert, Earl of Gloucester, firstborn, but
illigitimate son of King Henry I.
e.) Roger de Montgomery, Earl of Arundel and Shrewsbury. SEE gen 3.

3.) Roger de Montgomery, Earl of Arundel and Shrewsbury
m. Almodis, Countess of LaMarche. Here I found a glitch in my files.
I should be able to tell you who Almodis' parents were, but I've misplaced
them (I hope only temporarily) Can anyone help ?

Here the male line ends, for me at least. Roger and Almodis were the
parents of two daughters, Avice and Ponce.

Hope this helps you.

Today is the first day of the rest of your life ! (jste...@iquest.net) Jim

The common connection is a reputed descent from the family of Gunnor,
Duchess of Normandy. Robert de Torigni reported some genealogical notes
on the family, identifying the descendants of Gunnor's siblings, and of
several nieces (whose parent, sibling of Gunnor he has usually left
unidentified). The descents are as follows:

William the Conqueror: son Robert I, son Richard II, son of Richard I
and Gunnor.

William Fitz Osbern: son Osbern, son Arfast/Herfast, brother of Gunnor.

Roger de Mortimer: (Robert, from whom the stated relationship derives,
has: son of an unnamed niece of Gunnor, and brother of William de
Warenne, but this is erroneous. Recent analysis suggests that Roger was
uncle of William de Warenne, and he and William's father Ranulph (II)
were sons of Ranulph (I) de Warenne by Beatrice, sister of Robert,
Vicount of Rouen, who Torigni has marrying an unnamed niece of Gunnor.)

Roger de Montgomery: (Robert has: son of Hugh de M and Joscelina,
daughter of Wevia, sister of Gunnor, but this is contradicted by other
sources of his time. Reanalysis suggests that Roger was son of an
earlier Roger, son of Hugh by Joscelina, daughter of Senfria, another of
Gunnor's sisters.)

Im a descendant of Roger De Montgomery and I was trying to find if we connected to William the Conqueror. I did some fact checking off of this and it has really helped legitimize my evidence I've found so far.
So thank you.
