THURSTON BASSET (23)., Died c. 1080. He had issue: Stuart, p 188
RALPH BASSET, of Weldon, Northants (23)., He had large possessions in
several of the midland counties of England & held high judicial office. He
is mentioned in 1124 as presiding over a court held at Huncote,
Leicestershire, where he caused no less than 44 men convicted of robbery to
be hanged. He had issue: Foss, p 57 Shaw, Vol II Pt 1, p 12
GILBERT (21)., M Edith, d. of Robert II, Sire d'Ouilly, & his wife Edith
Fitz Forne (who was a mistress of Henry I, King of England). Died 1158.

THOMAS (12), of Hededen, Oxfordshire., His military service was rewarded by
the granting of the manor of Hededen by King Henry II. He was Sheriff of
Oxfordshire, 1164 & was one of the Justices Itinerant for Essex & Hertford,
1168. M Alice, d. of Alan de Dunstanville. Died 1181. He had issue:

ALAN (6), of Wycombe, Buckinghamshire., In 1216 he acted as a Justiciar at
Westminster. In 1218 he was sent on a royal mission to France & in 1220 he
was appointed to meet the King of Jerusalem on his landing in Kent.
Sheriff of Rutland, 1218-28. M Aline, d. of Phillip de Grey, Lord of
Wooton Basset & Broadtown, Wilts. Died 1231. He had issue: Weis, p 179

PHILIP (Sir), Kt., of Wycombe, Buckinghamshire (3), In 1233 he joined the
insurrection of Richard, Earl of Pembroke, but returned his allegiance in
the following year & from that time was in high favour with King Henry III.
He served in Henry III's wars in France & Wales & was made Governor of
Oxford Castle. He was appointed Chief Justiciar of England in July 1261 by
Henry III as the King sought to free himself from Baronial control. He
adhered to the King's cause against the Barons & fought at the Battle of
Lewes, 14 May 1264, when he was taken prisoner. M Hawise, d. of Sir
Matthew de Louvain, Kt., of Little Easton, Essex (See LOUVAIN). Died 1272.
He had issue: Weis, pp 73 & 136 Foss, p 59 Shaw, II Pt 1, p 12

One other comment. Sir Philip Basset was related in some manner to his wife,
Ela, Countess of Warwick. I believe that Philip's connection to Ela comes
through his grandmother, Alice Dunstanville, wife of Thomas Basset. Best
