Complete Peerage 6 (1926): 167-168 (sub Grey) has a good account of
the life history of Sir William de Grey (died 1369), of Sandiacre,
Derbyshire. It shows that Sir William was succeeded at his death by
his daughter and sole heiress, Agnes, wife of Sir Edward Hillary.
Agnes was aged 47 at her father's death, or born circa 1322. No
parentage is provided for Sir Edward Hillary.
Lincolnshire Notes and Queries 9 (1907): 134 includes a brief note on
Henry Hillary, of Scrivelsby, Lincolnshire (died 1349). It states
that he had two wives, Joan and Maud. Henry Hillary's son and heir
was Sir Edward Hillary, who is thought to have been a son of the 1st
wife, Joan.
Elsewhere Complete Peerage 8 (1932): 513, footnote d and 514, footnote
a (sub Marmion) shows that Joan Marmion (died 1340-1), daughter and
co-heiress of Philip Marmion (died 1291), married (1st) Thomas de
Ludlow, by whom she had a son, Thomas; and (2nd) Henry Hillary (died
1349), by whom she had a son, Edward Hillary, knt. At the Coronation
of King Edward III in 1327, Henry Hillary, Joan's 2nd husband, claimed
to perform the service of King's Champion.
Inasmuch as the IPM of Agnes de Grey's husband, Sir Edward Hillary,
shows that he held at his death 2 acres of land at Scrivelsby,
Lincolnshire, which property was the inheritance of Joan Marmion, it
seems safe to conclude that Sir Edward Hillary, husband of Agnes de
Grey, is the same person as Sir Edward Hillary, who was the son and
heir of Henry Hillary, of Scrivelsby, Lincolnshire, by his 1st wife,
Joan Marmion [see Complete Peerage, 6 (1926): 167, footnote h (sub
Grey)].

Dear Doug,
Thanks for your very good post of yesterday. I've just sent off
to the list a message, which provides a pedigree (via Grey of
Sandiacre) from Richard III, duke of Normandy to the Cavendish
descendants of Elizabeth ("Bess of") Hardwick, incl. the emigrant
Jane Lowe.
Some ancillary evidence which ties your Marmion - Hillary
connection a little bit tighter:
CP VI:168, re: John Grey, formerly Hillary, states
" On or before 13 May 1390 he assumed the name of Grey (c).
Note (c): " Close Roll, 13 Ric. II, pt. ii, m. 9. Writ
(13 May 1390) to escheator in Worcester with
respect to the manor of Ruggehalle. Sir Baldwin
Frevyle, by charter indented, gave Crowenest
and Ruggehall to John Hillary, s. and h. of
Edward Hillary, and he by the name of John Grey,
s. and h. of Edward Hillary, further conveyed
the same. "
Sir Baldwin Freville and John Grey (of Sandiacre) were coheirs
of Philip Marmion (d. 1291), to-wit:
Philip Marmion = Joan de Kilpeck

~ John Grey was a minor at his father's death in 1362 (he was
born say 1355). As he was roughly equivalent in age to
the father of Sir Baldwin Freville of the 1390 indenture,
either he was the son of Sir Edward Hillary at a late point
in Sir Edward's life, or perhaps there's another generation
to be placed in the Hillary descent.....?
Again, many thanks for this and your other contributions.
Cheers,
John
