Dear Newsgroup ~
Complete Peerage 1 (1910): 236–238 (sub Arundel) has an account of
William d'Aubeney, 3rd Earl of Arundel (died 1221), who married Mabel,
daughter of Hugh, Earl of Chester. This couple have numerous modern
descendants including many newsgroup members.
Regarding his death, Complete Peerage provides the following
information:
"He embarked in the crusade of 1218, and was at the taking of Damietta
in Nov. 1219, but died at Cainell, near Rome ('quoddam oppidulum
Kainel nomine') shortly before 30 March 1221 (when the news reached
England), and was buried at Wymondham Priory." END OF QUOTE.
The statement "when the news reached England" of the earl's death is
based on a record in the Fine Rolls which indicates that on 30 March
1221 the king ordered the Sheriff of Norfolk and Suffolk to take into
the king's hand the lands which were "Comitis Arundel."
Recently I located a record of the death date of William, Earl of
Arundel, in a list of early medieval obits published in Meyer, Culture
of Christendom (1993): 132:
Canterbury Obituary Lists: “Kal. [Feb.] [1 Feb.]. Obiit Willelmus
Comes de Arundel.”
The above record may be viewed at the following weblink:

We can be certain that this is the correct Earl William, as no other
early earls of this name and title died anytime near 1 February. As
such, it would appear that Earl William died in Italy on 1 Feb.
1220/1.
