I've found some references in the Archives to the sister of John Turnbull,
of Minto marrying Sir Alexander STEWART of Darnley d bef 5 May 1404. My son
descends from a later John Turnbull, b est 1600 ish, husband of Elizabeth,
dau of Gilbert ELLIOT, of Stobs. Does anyone have anything of this family,
or TURNBULL, of Sharplaw ?
TIA.
Don McArthur.
According to 'The Elliots - The Story of a Border Clan' by The Dowager
Lady Eliott of Stobs and Sir Arthur Eliott, 11th Baronet of Stobs (ISBN
0 85 422 081 X), Appendix D:
Gilbert ELLOT of Stobs was the son of Robert ELLOT of Redheugh, the 15th
Chief (d. bef 18 Oct 1564) and Jean SCOTT. He was known as "Gibbie wi'
the Golden Gartins" and became the progenitor of both the ELIOTTs of
Stobs and the ELLIOTs of Minto (nb: various surname spellings). Gilbert
married Margaret SCOTT and died 24 January 1634 leaving a large family,
including:
"7. Elizabeth, who married John TURNBULL of Minto and had issue a son
John. In 1673 her son sold Minto which, after passing through several
hands, was bought in 1703 by John Turnbull's cousin, Sir Gilbert ELLIOT
of Headshaw, ancestor of the present Earls of Minto."
There are a few other references to Turnbull over the generations, but
these are mostly peripheral and not Sharplaw.
