The following message was sent under MIME a couple of days ago. I forgot
that not everyone has conversion facilities. I'm sorry! I'm sending it
again but in text format. (It's long!) It reads clumsily in text format.
The numbers following names without intervening spaces, are the direct
lines of the individual in question. The numbers refer to people so
numbered in this file.

Any #+number is my personal database code for that individual.

Ed:

Many thanks indeed for your file of Geoffrey DE MANDEVILLE's ancestors.
I am attaching my file of his descendants. There have been emails,
suggesting that Alice, his daughter, did not marry into the LAMBERT
family. It would be helpful if those people could give their sources. I
have attached the sources I have discovered in the file. I have also
sent your file to the original person who fed me the information. He is
away for the coming 6 weeks so we will not be getting a reaction until
the mid summer period.

I was amused to see your file includes marriages with the DE BRIONNE
family. In 1891 my grandmother, Rosa Maria BRION married William
LAMBERT! My DE BRION research is at its early stages, but family members
are already pointing to the Auvergne region in France.

I'll feed your file into my database and come back with observations,
and leave you with my file, if it has any interest to you.

With good wishes

Ian

conveyed to his son Randulphus (Ralph) in 1301 - not 1333 as detailed
above. It is from this conveyance that Busfield notes the pedigree of

Richard Waleys or Wellys #1672). John died 1533, 19 Jun 1533, date of
his will. Burke's "Family Records" 1897: of Woodmansterne, bought
Perrotts Manor in Banstead, 1515, had also lands in Coulsdon, Chipstead,
Horley, and other places.

Sanders D LAMBERT's letter 30 Jun 1997: has will as 1500.

"A history of the Surrey village of Woodmansterne" Part One: to
1900 by D W Busfield ISBN 0 9512102 1 1 pp 72-74: In 1737 the College of
Heralds was asked by Sir Daniel LAMBERT ... to produce a family
pedigree... they did not go back before John LAMBERT who died in 1533
and much of the information in this pedigree is supported by the
Woodmansterne Church Registers, from which the College of Heralds
probably obtained their information.

... This John is considered as the founder of the Surrey family
of LAMBERTs ... John's connection with Woodmansterne stems from the
facts [sic] that he married into a family of the gentry in
Woodmansterne, the Welles, and his daughter Julyan also married into a
similar family, the Huntleys, although they were formerly from the next
village, Chipstead. Although John had properties in Woodmansterne,
including Shortes Place which his eldest son, Jeffrey (1500 to 1566)
inherited from him, John lived in Welles Farm in Banstead and was buried
in Banstead according to directions in his will.

At the beginning of the 16th century he also held lands at
Chipstead, Coulsdon and Horley and in 1513 he bought Shortes Place, a
large residence on land at the corner of what is now Woodmansterne
Street and Carshalton Road, opposite the Church. In 1515 he bought
Perrott's Manor in Banstead. He had two sons and four daughters and in
his will he directed that he should be buried at Banstead. In spite of
these connections with Banstead, Shortes Place remained in the
possession of that side of the family for five generations until the
impoverished Roger (1639 to 1674), his father having fought for King
Charles, sold it to Jeffrey LAMBERT (1642 to 1681) a grandson of Roger's
great-grandfather's brother, Daniel LAMBERT of Garrett's, Banstead. A
further four generations of LAMBERTs lived at Shortes Place, the last
being the second wife of William (1761 to 1838). She died in 1848 and
the house was demolished a few years later.

John, who died in 1533, had two sons, the eldest Jeffrey [#1664]
(1500 to 1566) is the Ancestor of the Woodmansterne LAMBERTs, while
Roger [#2767], who died in 1558, is the Ancestor of the Banstead
LAMBERTs. Roger married Catherine CAUSTON of Oxted and they lived at
Perrott's Manor, Banstead. - courtesy of Iris Ashby 2 Dec 1997. Johan:

Letter: President Whitelock to General Monk.

You have heard that the old Cavaliers have joined with many of
our secret enemies, who are most dangerous because they professed to be
our friends; but by God's blessing and the activity of the militia,
their designs have been frustrated, and they dispersed whenever they
openly appeared, and many taken prisoners, only sir George Booth, sir
Thomas Middleton, and many old and new Cavaliers of Cheshire, Lancashire
and North Wales are in combination about Chester; but Colonel Croxton
holds Chester Castle, and will, we hope, be able to keep it until Major-
General Lambert, who is marching to his relief with a considerable body
of troops, arrive.

You are to instruct your troops to the greatest viligance over
the disaffected there, who may be in correspondence with those in
England. You are to recruit your horse to the number of 80 in a troop,
and your foot to 800 in each regiment, if you find a sufficient number
of well-affected persons to recruit them.

Busfield ISBN 0 9512102 1 1 p75: It was this William who sold 'Lambert
Oaks' (more recently known as just 'The Oaks'), to the Earl of Derby.

William married Jane, the daughter of Robert LEGRAND of Guilton,
Kent, and by her had three children... See the detail about Jane's early
death under her entry at #1084. ... William married again, and his
second wife, having the unusual name 'Nutty'. See details of Nutty under
her entry at #1085. ...She [Nutty # 2988] was buried at Woodmansterne,
as was William, his first wife [Jane #1084] and their daughter [Jane
Elizabeth #1088] and there is a memorial plaque for them in the Church.
The records of the Vestry Meetings show that William took an active part
in the affairs of both Church and village during the last fifty years of
his life. He was Churchwarden in 1788/9 and again from 1821 to 1825. The
Vestry Minutes indicate that at the end of his second period as
Churchwarden he held a little over five pounds of church money and that
two year later steps were taken to recover this. It was almost five
years before William again attended a Vestry Meeting. His portrait was
painted by John Constable who was entertained at Shortes Place but the
painting was done at Constable's London Studio. While at Shortes Place
in 1825 Constable did a painting of three of William's grandchildren. -
