Thank you for your good post.
Alfonso VIII, King of Castile (died 1214), and his wife, Eleanor of
England, are assigned fourteen children by the historian, Pedro Aguado
Bleye, Manual de Historia de España 1 (1954): 638-649, namely seven
sons, Sancho, Fernando, Sancho (again), Enrique, Fernando (again),
Fernando (again), and Enrique (I) [King of Castile], and seven
daughters, Berenguela, Sancha, Urraca, Blanche (or Blanca), Mafalda,
Leonor (wife of Jaime I, King of Aragón), and Constanza (a nun at Las
Huelgas).
I might recommend you also check out the interesting article by
Szabolcs de Vajay entitled "From Alphonso VII to Alphonso X," which
appeared in Studies in Gen. & Fam. Hist. in Tribute to Charles Evans
(1989): 366-417.
One last matter: I assume you took your list of King John's children at
least in part from my book, Plantagenet Ancestry (2004): 11-13. This
list is current and up-to-date. I should point out that two of John's
children in this list are not yet proven. One is King John's alleged
daughter, Isabel, wife of Richard Fitz Ives, Knt. The other unproven
child is Philip Fitz Roy, who occurs in a record dated 1263 with a
wife, Lavinia.

What evidence IS there that he is son, and not grandson of John?
taf
Identified as King John's son, Friar Bartholomew, a Dominican, was given a
dispensation in January 1252 to minister in the orders to which he had been
ordained, and to be promoted to the episcopate (Bliss, vol. 1: 281).
In Aug. 1254 Bartholomew had leave to converse at table with others of his
own congregation, or with Friars Minor (Bliss, 1: 305).
I have seen no other published references to Bartholomew, nor any reference
to him in secondary works. Has his paternity been conclusively disproved?
I am combing my notes for the citation to a notice in one of the edited Pipe
Rolls for John's reign that mentions an Exchequer reference to a "William
filius Regis." The word "regis" was apparently written in full & therefore
not an abbreviation for "Reginald." The editor was unsure whether this
William was actually a son of John, or possibly of Henry the Young King or
Richard I. I don't know if this reference is in my genealogical notes or
with my other notes since I probably jotted it down in connection with
research on the English administrative machinery, & I may never have
duplicated it for my genealogical files. If that is the case it will take
me some time to locate it.

King John's illegitimate son, Bartholomew, was a papal chaplain and a
member of the order of Friars Preachers. He was living in August 1254.
[References: Papal Regs.: Letters 1 (1893): 281 ("brother of king
Henry, being an illegitimate son of king John"), 286 ("the king's
brother"), 305].

<< HENRY THE YOUNG KING (1155-1183)
He married Marguerite of France in 1160
1. William (1177) >>
This was the date of their betrothal, (on 2 Nov 1160)
They were married in Winchester Cathedral on 27 Aug 1172

<< MATILDA (1156-1189)
She married Henry the Lion, Duke of Saxony & Bavaria, in 1168
1. Heinrich I, Palatine Count of the Rhein (1173-1227) >>
His father and him had the same name.
Consistency requires you to call them both Heinrich or them both Henry :)

<< RICHARD I, KING OF ENGLAND (1157-1199)
He married Berengaria of Navarre in 1191
Illegitimate issue:
1. Philip (f.l. 1201), married Amelie of Cognac >>
He was first betrothed to Alice of France (sister to his brother's
fiancee/wife)
This betrothal was annulled Mar 1190 at Messina
AFTER this he married Berengaria

<< > 4. Leonor of Castile, married Jaume I, King of Aragon

Did Jaime divorce Leonor ?
Heraldry of the Royal Families of Europe, Jiri Louda and Michael Maclagan;
Clarkson N Potter, New York 1981
shows that Jaime married Violante of Hungary in 1235 and off this marriage had
Pedro 1236-, King of Aragon in 1276 and
Isabelle of Aragon in 1243 who married Phillip III, King of France in 1262
Will Johnson
<< (Not the same as Queen Leonor of Aragon who d. 1251.) >>
Would Leonor really have died as Queen after being divorced 20 years earlier ?
However Violante of Hungary is also said to have d in 1251 so perhaps these
two wives have been confused here.
Will Johnson
Yes, Apr 1229, presumably due to their common descent from Alfonso VII.
taf
That is the case. Leonor d. 1244 at Las Huegas and buried there, where
she had become a nun following her divorce. I wonder if there is some
confusion between Leonor, daughter of Alfonso and Leonor who was buried
there as an adult and Sancha, here infant sister also buried there.

I found that Miriam Shadis and Constance Hoffman Berman, in their
article in "Eleanor of Aquitaine: Lord and Lady (2002)", place Leonor's
birth in 1200/1201.
What basis did they give?
Szabolcs de Vajay says: "There is controversy over the year of the
Infanta's birth. Del Arco [_Sepulcros de la Casa Real de Castilla_], p.
245 is emphatic that she was born in 1208, hence the same age as her
husband. Gonzalez [_El reino de Castilla en la epoca de Alfonso VIII_,
1:194-96 & n. 191], notes that King Enrique I was the last born child of
Alfonso VIII and places Leonor between Mafalda and Constanza, which
would have made her born before 1195 and at least 14 years older than
her husband King Jaime."
