Good Afternoon,
I would like to thank these persons:=20
Lesley Robertson, Ralph Holloway, G . EDWARD ALLEN=20
for advising me to access the Clan Donnachaidh site. I'll do so today =
while I
have their messages on my desk top but for some strange reason I never =
read
the email from Mr. Robertson so I haven't a clue as to what was sent.
For those wondering why I spell my name Robinson dispite my claim
to be a Robertson, this apparently happened after my GrGrGrandpa Tirey
Robertson migrated to Anson County, NC. Almost every record I can find =
spell
the name Robinson (perhaps due to the county clerk writing it wrong) but =
the odd thing is his son, Jeffrey, joined the U.S. Army in 1808 after =
receiving a commission as 2ndLt. in what was an early Corps of =
Engineers. Lt. Robertson
was a surveyor and was assigned to work with Capt. McClellan in =
surveying
many of the newly opened lands in Tennessee. He was given the rank of
Captain in 1814 and his warrant or commission was signed by the =
President.
The commission spells the name Capt. Jeffrey Robertson and it is still =
in the Greenville, SC branch of the family. Not too surprisingly, =
Heitsman, an author of a book listing each men by name, their rank, =
where they were stationed and
in many cases what position they occupied. His book spelled Jeffrey's =
name
as Robertson. Capt. Robertson was assigned to the 7th Infantry, a unit =
that
served as the anchor to the right side of Jackson's line at the Battle =
of New
Orleans over the Christmas and New Years holiday period.=20
Going back two generations, Jeffrey Robertson (1660-1734), received=20
2 grants of land from Governor Gooch (signed by the King) in 1738. One =
of them spelled Jeffrey's name as Robinson while the other spelled it =
Roberson.
Dispite this tendency to change the surname most branches of the line =
used
the original spelling of Robertson. Unless the new researcher is aware =
of these
name changes it makes it difficult to trace a lineage. If someone had =
told me in
1977, when I begin my quest to find my ancestry, that our family surname =
was
originally spelled Roberson I would have asked what weed they were =
smoking.
In closing, please accept my sincere thank you for your advice. It is =
deeply appreciated.

It's always nice when folk say thankyou. However, please note that I use
the FEMALE spelling of my name! I answer to many things, but not to Mr.
As to what I sent, I think it was basically to check with Clan
Donnachaidh - can't remember anything else.
