Sir Willaim Courtenay (b. Abt 1477, d. 24 Nov 1535), son of Sir William
Courtenay and Margaret Bonville, married Cicely, daughter of Sir John
Cheney.

Did Sir William have a second wife named Mary Gainesford or a daughter
Gertrude Courtenay (b. Abt 1521, d. 30 Apr 1566) married to John
Chichester?

Comments will be greatly appreciated.

I didn't see a response to your question, so I thought I'd take a stab at
it.

William Courtenay did marry Mary Gainsford (1499 - 1572). Mary was the
daughter of Sir John Gainsford and Anne Hawte, daughter of Richard Hawte.
Richard Hawte's parents were William Hawte and Joan Wydeville - Joan being
the sister of Sir Richard Wydeville, the father Elizabeth Wydeville, wife
- and queen - of king Edward IV.

After William Courtenay died, Mary Gainsford married (in 1537) Sir Anthony
Kingston (1519 - April 14, 1556), the son of Sir William Kingston, the
Keeper of the Tower, and his wife Elizabeth.

I'm sorry, but I don't know if William Courtenay had any children.

According to Vivian's Visitations of Devon (p. 246), Sir William Courtenay of
Powderham, son of Sir William and Margaret (Bonville) Courtenay, married only
one wife, Cecily Cheyney. As she was her husband's executor in 1512, he would
not have had a second wife. Sir William's son, another Sir William Courtenay
of Powderham, called "the Great," died 24 Nov. 1535. He married (1) Margaret
Edgcombe, and (2) Mary Gainsford, daughter of Sir John Gainsford. It was this
Mary who remarried (2) Sir Anthony Kingston of Cadleigh. She died in 1572.
Gertrude Courtenay, wife of Sir John Chichester of Raleigh, was daughter of Sir
WIlliam by the second wife Mary Gainsford. Vivian also has a detailed account
of the Chichester family of Raleigh on pp. 172--5.

Was this Sir William Courtenay related to Courtenay, Marquis of Exeter who
was attainted and executed along with Henry de la Pole, Lord Montague?

Yes, thank you very much!

Of course, as is frequently the case, answering one question raises another
(or two). According to David Hume's "History of England" the son of Henry
Courtenay, 10th Earl of Devon, died abroad at a relatively young age,
apparently unmarried, leaving that line extinct. Is this accurate, and did
Sir William "the Great" leave heirs?

Cheers,
Kathy

Thanks to everyone that responded to my question on the
second wife of Sir William Courtenay, Mary Gainsford. I
appreciate the help.

I had rented Vivian's Visitations of Devon before, but had
apparently not copied all the material I should have. I will
re-order. If anyone is interested - it is on microfilm through
the LDS on roll 0873760, Item 2.
