Complete Peerage 4 (1916): 374-377 includes a good account of the life
history of John Dinham, 4th Lord Dinham (died 1428). Regarding his
second marriage to Maud Mautravers, widow of Peter de la Mare, the
following information is given:
"He married, 2ndly, before 26 Nov. 1396, Maud, widow of Piers de la
Mare, of offley, Herts ..., and elder daughter and coheiress of Sir
John Mautravers, of Hook, Dorset, Crowell, Oxon, etc., by Elizabeth,
sister and coheiress of William Daumarle, and younger daughter of Sir
William Daumarle, of Middle Chinnock, Somerset, and Woodbury, Devon."
END OF QUOTE.
The date of John Dinham's marriage to Maud (Mautravers) de la Mare can
be narrowed down further in time. Recently I found the abstract of a
charter issued by Maud Mautravers herself while searching through old
volumes of Collectanea Top. et Gen. The charter states that Maud made
her feoffment "in pure widowhood" 1 August 1396. As such, it would
appear she was still a widow on 1 August 1396, but married to John
Dinham sometime before 26 November 1396. A copy of the abstract is
provided below:
"Feoffment from Matilda de la Mare, in pure widowhood, to Sir William
Ekerdon, parson of the church of Lymington, and Robert Gray. their
heirs and assigns, of all her estate in lands, tenements, etc. in
Kyngesdon, co. Somerset. Witnesses: Humphrey de Stafford, John Cary,
Knts., John Horsy, William Carrent, John Faukoner, and others. Dated
at Houke [Hook, Dorset], 1 August 20 Richard II [1396]. Seal, a gothic
M with two interlaced triangles.
