Looking at those earlier generations that were discussed in depth earlier
this year, just a couple of points:

(1) The father in law of William (d.1215) was of "Erdington", not Erington
(I assume that's the Erdington that has been absorbed by Birmingham).

(2) You give a son William of this William, d. c.1216. I haven't seen
anything to indicate the existence of such a son, and I suspect it may come
from someone's attempt to reconcile different accounts with different
numbers of Williams. On the other hand, I haven't seen anything to disprove
the existence of such a son, but I think we do know enough about the
chronology to show he would have to have been born after his father's death.

Chris,

Thanks for those two corrections.

In fact Burke's Extinct Peerage has "Erington", but I am sure you are correct
with "Erdington". My original notes of about ten years ago, were based on
BEP, then updated as more reliable information came along, not the best way
to go about things. Burke's is also where the extra William comes from, but
there does not seem to be any reliable evidence for him.

best regards,
Adrian

Dear Adrian ~

In your good post last week on the Fitz Alan/Arundel family, you
stated that there was some doubt as to the "pedigree" of Eleanor de
Arundel, wife of Henry de Percy, Knt., 1st Lord Percy. I can share
these particulars with you which were not discussed by the editor of
Complete Peerage in his otherwise reliable account of the Percy
family.

C.P. 10 (1945): 458, footnote k (sub Percy), states incorrectly that
the parentage of Eleanor de Arundel, wife of Henry de Percy, is
"obscure." Standard accounts of the Percy family all identify Eleanor
as the "daughter of the Earl of Arundel" evidently Richard Fitz Alan
(or Arundel), 8th Earl of Arundel (see for example H.S.P. 16 (1881):
241-244 (1563/4 Vis. Yorkshire) (Percy pedigree: "Henry 3 Lord Percy =
Elenor doughter of therl of Arundell (Rychard Fitzalan)").
Arrangements for Eleanor's marriage to Henry de Percy are reflected in
the recognizance made in 1300, by Eleanor's father, Richard, Earl of
Arundel, for a debt of 2,000 marks which he owed Henry de Percy (see
Cal. Close Rolls, 1296-1302 (1906), pg. 404)]. Such recognizances
were often recorded in this period to guarantee the fulfillment of a
marriage contract between two families. Moreover, the records show
that Eleanor was called "kinswoman" by King Edward II on two separate
occasions, once in 1318 and again in 1322, presumably on the basis of
Eleanor's descent through her mother from Amadeo IV, Count of Savoy,
brother of Edward II's great-grandmother, Beatrice of Savoy (see Cal.
Fine Rolls, 1307-1319 (1912), pg. 378; Cal. Fine Rolls, 1319-1327
(1912), pg. 134). Eleanor's brother, John de Arundel, was similarly
called "kinsman" by both Kings Edward II of England and Philip of
France (the latter king also being a descendant of the Savoy family)
[see Cal. of Entries in the Papal Registers: Letters 2 (1895): 201)].
Lastly, Eleanor is known to have been the sister of Richard de
Arundel, Knt., for whom she served as his executrix. C.P. 10 (1945):
458, footnote k, notes that Arundel was "already being used as a
family name by the Fitz Alan family." Research indicates the Fitz
Alan family did employ the surname, Arundel. Eleanor's father,
Richard Fitz Alan, was himself styled "Richard de Arundel" on at least
one occasion in a grant made to him in 1291 (see C.P. 1 (1910): 241).
As such, there is no inconsistency with Eleanor being sister to
Richard de Arundel, Knt., and her being the daughter of Richard Fitz
Alan.

Regarding further information regarding Eleanor de Arundel, C.P. sub
Percy indicates that Eleanor died in July or August 1328. I presume
Eleanor died at Leconfield, co. York, which was her chief place of
residence at this time. [Reference: Index of Placita de Banco A.D.
1327-1328 2 (PRO, Lists & Indexes, No. 32) (repr. 1963):
735,745,789-790]. I note that Leconfield was also the birth place of
her son and heir, Henry de Percy, Knt., 2nd Lord Percy.
