Dear Newsgroup ~

Complete Peerage 8 (1932): 523 (sub Marny) states Sir John Marney [died 1472] and his wife Joan Throckmorton [parents of Henry Marney, Knt., Lord Marney] were married before 27 April 1447.

No source is given for this statement.

This date actually comes from a papal indult granted on that date to "John Marney, nobleman, knight," and his wife, Joan. Reference: Papal Regs.: Letters 10 (1915): 303, which is available at the following weblink:

https://books.google.com/books?id=7QQ5AQAAMAAJ&q=%22John+Marney%22+Joan&dq=%22John+Marney%22+Joan&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwi867fZtpfOAhWmz4MKHaGYB_k4MhDoAQg1MAY

Sir John Marney's known wife, Joan Throckmorton, was twice a widow when he married her. Joan married (1st) Robert Gifford, of Stonehouse, Gloucestershire, who died 1446, and (2nd) Drew Barantine, Esq., of Haseley, Chalgrove, and Henton (in Chinnor), Oxfordshire, Knight of the Shire for Oxfordshire, 1445–6, who died 23 April 1453.

Inasmuch as Drew Barantyne died in 1453, Joan Throckmorton obviously can't have been John Marney's wife named Joan back in 1447. As such, one must assume that Sir John Marney had two wives both named Joan and that his wife, Joan, in 1447 was an earlier unknown first wife.

Elsewhere I find that Sir John Marny sued Robert Bretenell [Brudenell], of Stoke, Buckinghamshire and Maud his wife and another in the Court of Common Pleas in 1463 regarding a trespass [vi et armis] at Henton (in Chinnor), Oxfordshire. Reference: Court of Common Pleas, CP40/807, image 580f (available at http://‌aalt.law.uh.edu/‌AALT2/‌E4/‌CP40no807/‌aCP40no807fronts/‌IMG_0580.htm).

Sir John Marney presumably held his interests at Henton (in Chinnor), Oxfordshire in 1463 in right of his wife, Joan's dower from her earlier marriage to Drew Barantyne.
